I’ve been great thank you! I’ve been overseas a fair bit recently, in India and the US (I’m currently in LA), but will be back in Sydney soon to regroup and refocus!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Take A Minute”?
Take A Minute is one of my favourite tracks on my upcoming album. My producer, Jud Mahoney had really captured the late 90s/early 00s R&B and Motown sound that I was going for. The song has an uplifting vibe and is about when you have a goal or a dream and no idea of how you are going to achieve it. It reminds us to not stress or overthink it and just take the first step – the rest will follow.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
The lyrics were born out of a conversation we were having about how I had left the corporate world and had all these big plans and dreams, but no idea how it was all going to happen, so we started to write the song in the form of advice that I really needed to hear and follow!
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes, the video is just having some final tweaks done & should be out in a couple of weeks! It’s very different to my last one for Starship, and gives a snapshot into my journey from the corporate world to pursuing my dreams.
How was the recording and writing process?
We were super focussed but it was still a lot of fun. I adore the creative process of writing and being in the vocal booth, stretching myself, learning and growing. I wrote and recorded everything in Glasgow and flew over from Sydney for a couple of weeks at a time.
What was it like to work with Jud Mahoney and Natalie DeLucia? How much did they get to influence the song?
It’s always great to work with them, they’re so incredible and I always learn so much! Some of the song concepts were mine, some were a collaboration, but we co-write together so they definitely have an influence over where a song goes lyrically and melodically.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?
I always try to understand the concept of the song, whether I’m on my own or collaborating, because knowing what its about always makes it easier for the lyrics to come. Collaborating is often much easier because you bounce ideas off each other and can then spark new ones. It takes me much longer when I write on my own and I’m always second guessing whether something is good or not!
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes, the plan is for one more single and then the album shortly after!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I’m looking at potentially releasing it in August/September, so watch this space! But I can give you an exclusive that the title will be EGO.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes, I hope so! I definitely want to get out there this year 🙂
What else is happening next in Danielle Bellas’ world?
I’ll be concentrating on the next single soon, getting everything together for it, working on video concepts and artwork and I’ll be heading to the UK at some point in July/August too which I’m super excited about!
