INTERVIEW: Matti Roots

Hi Matti, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Awesome, thanks.

Can you talk to us more about your latest singles “I Come In Peace/Out There”?

Yeh sure… I did ‘Out There’ years ago and always liked the atmosphere. Then last year i was jamming with Foodoo and came up with the chords for I Come in Peace and i had this weird alien sounding synth and spaceship sample that just made me think of otherworldly stuff, and the concept came into my head. I wanted to put it out and thought that ‘Out There’ was a good compliment to it…

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Not as such… but I’m always fascinated with Space and the Universe… who isn’t, right!?

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Yeh it was cool – I had never done a music video before but i found these cool guys Ruby and Boya who have a stylish eye.. I wanted to create 2 videos that worked together, so we filmed both on the same day, with slightly different approaches. I knew I wanted a spacey theme but i just let Ruby and Boya run with it..

How was the recording and writing process?

Both happened pretty quickly… For I Come In Peace Got the beat and the melodies and concept down.. programmed the beat with Foodoo and developed it lyrically and Bento helped out.. Decided as a finishing touch to add some cello and called up a guy i\d worked with a while ago who I always remembered, Wayne Urquart. It just added this warm , organic sonic element to the track which i really loved. With ’Out There’ I think i banged that one out in a few hours!

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?

Yes and no.. No, because i’m still ultimately trying to get to a point of feeling what i’m doing.. Yes because when i’m on my own, that point of feeling is all mine.. when you consider someone else’s thoughts, you see things from a different perspective.

Are both songs connected in any way or they are both standalone track?

Yes totally, although written at different times…

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I have loads coming out actually.. just did a cool Soul album for a label called Audio Network where we recorded at Abbey Road .. that was a trip. We’re overdubbing full orchestra next month and i’m excited to get that out. I’ve also got another single that i’m creating something special for.. this ones a bit more upbeat n groove led.. and there’s a tonne of material that i’d like to get out in due course plus i’m always making new stuff.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

‘White Lie’ should be out in September…

Any plans to hit the road?

Not at the mo.. i’m just studio rat at the moment.. to be honest, it’s just less stressful! Having said that, i love to play so i’m sure i’ll get back to that in some way soon..

What else is happening next in Matti Roots’ world?

Just producing for tonnes of people, managing a couple of artists, doing various advert music stuff, and i have another production project called IAMU that i’m doing at the moment with Bento.. Just trying to live, love and be happy. Nahmean?
