How to Pick the Right Dishwasher

Although all dishwashers may look the same, there are huge variances in how well they clean and dry your dirty dishes. The best dishwashers will leave your plates, cutlery and glassware shiny and clean, whilst the worst will leave bits of grime behind and force you to re-wash them in the kitchen sink.

Picking the right model does not just come down to how well they clean, though, it comes down to your budget and what you can afford to buy. You’ll need to find the very best dishwasher for your budget and decide whether you want a fully-integrated dishwasher which blends in with your kitchen, or one which is freestanding on its own.

That’s about all that can be said – a dishwasher very much depends on what you can afford. There are plenty of different dishwashers out there and a homewares expert will be able to help you pick the right one. If you want to do a little research first, check out this Dishwasher Guide.

#1: How Much Do Dishwashers Cost?

Dishwashers range in price from as little as $200 all the way up into the thousands. The price of a dishwasher is in no way indicative of its quality and you should not let a high-priced dishwasher distract you from the qualities of one which is perhaps a little cheaper.

It is possible to buy a very good dishwasher which is affordable and gets the basics right. With a cheaper dishwasher does come an absence of the fancier features, but if you do not mind sacrificing a few of these features in favor of price and quality, you do not need to worry.

#2: Dishwasher Running Costs

The expenses of a dishwasher do not stop at buying the actual unit, and overall dishwasher running costs can add a significant amount of money onto your energy bill.

Again, this depends on your dishwasher. Some dishwashers are more energy efficient and use less water than others and this is something which you need to factor into your search. Water usage is the main factor, and this can vary a lot. For instance, there are full-sized machines which use substantially less than their slimline counterparts.

#3: Freestanding vs Integrated

You also need to decide whether you want a freestanding or an integrated dishwasher which is built into your kitchen’s fittings. Freestanding dishwashers are the most common and can fit into most kitchens, whereas integrated dishwashers are more personal and blend into your kitchen’s fixtures and fittings.

The major positive with an integrated dishwasher is overall style – freestanding dishwashers don’t exactly look very swish! An integrated dishwasher is typically more expensive, too, and cannot be moved around.

Choosing the right dishwasher is not an exact science and there are many variables which need to be considered. The three above points are just a few of many different variables which you need to think about, such as child safety locks, timers and delays, adjustable shelving and even Wi-Fi. Making the final decision requires a lot of thought and weighing up of all the different variations.
