PREMIERE: Jennafer Lynsey Releases New Music Video For “Lights”

Jennafer is excited to launch her second single, “Lights,” a sweet, mid-tempo number that showcases her fluid vocal style. “’Lights’ is about feeling lost in life, in any situation,” Jennafer explains. “Everyone knows the feeling of being lost or alone, and I want ‘Lights’ to provide hope, and help people to look to the light and trust that in the end, it will all work out.”

Jennafer co-wrote “Lights” with her writing partner Keesy Timmer (Kelsea Ballerini), and the song came easily to the pair, but only after some prodding. “I was actually having major writer’s block at one songwriting session, and then Keesy looked at me and said, ‘Pick a word. Any word.’ So I looked around the room and saw this standing lamp with a bunch of bulbs on it, and I said, ‘Lights!’ He wrote it down and told me that was our song title. Then, he told me to name different types of lights. ‘Tail lights, porch lights, starlight, sunlight,” just flowed out of me. Next, Keesy asked me to tell him what lights do, and I said ‘flicker.’  At that point, he grabbed his guitar and started strumming and for both of us, the song just flowed and plopped itself on our computer screens. When a song flows out of you like that, it’s as if it’s coming from some higher form of inspiration.”

Today we are pleased to team up with Lynsey for the premiere of her new music video for “Lights,” which captures very well the DIY style and sense of loss the band has come to be known for.

Singer-songwriter Jennafer Lynsey would probably be the first person to tell you that she has had a few “pinch me” moments lately… and well, who would blame her? The Buffalo, NY native moved to Nashville, worked with accomplished musicians, wrote outstanding songs, signed to a record label, and introduced her song “Face To Face” to the world, with an accompanying music video. Who says dreams don’t come true? “This whole experience has been incredible so far. I am so lucky to be working with such talented people, I can’t believe this is my life.”

For her newest track, Jennafer enlisted superstar producer Matt Squire (Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, One Direction, Selena Gomez, and many more). “Matt really listened to what I wanted, let me toss around ideas and asked for my input on the arrangement. He really did all the work that makes both ‘Face To Face’ and ‘Lights’ sound so incredibly amazing.”

Jennafer can’t wait to take her music on the road and play to her growing fan base. “Performing is my all time favorite thing to do in this entire world. It just completely lights me up. Feeling the crowd – that vibe is just indescribable. I always want people to leave feeling better than when they came in.”

Hi Jennafer, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

– Hi! Thank you, it’s so nice to meet you! I am doing very well.  Excited for the future! 🙂

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Lights”?

– “Lights” was a song that I wrote when I was at a low point in my life. I was dealing with major writer’s block and struggling to figure out who I was going to be in this world. This song is what I needed to keep pushing me forward. It came to me when I needed it the most.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

– It’s actually quite cool how the song came about. I was in a songwriting session with Keesy, telling him about how I had writer’s block and couldn’t write and that it was really starting to frustrate me. He came up with the idea of how we were going to write that day. He looked at me and told me to pick a word. I looked around the session room and there was this tall lamp with a bunch of bulbs coming off of it. I looked at him and said, “Lights.” He wrote it down on a piece of paper and told me that was the song title. From there he asked me questions like, “What are different types of lights?” and “What do lights do?” That’s where we got parts of the song like, “Tail lights, and flickers.” From there the song just came out of us.

What made you want to make a hybrid between a lyric and actual music video?

– The lyrics in the song have such deep meaning and they paint such a picture so the label and I got together and decided that a music video mixed with a lyric video would be perfect. The lyrics are such a huge focal point of the song. We really wanted to make sure we showed that off.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

– It was amazing. It was arranged and done so quickly. We wanted to keep it simple, so we rented out an Airbnb, and there literally were only three other people there behind the scenes. My mom was one of them of course.

How was the recording and writing process?

– Going into the studio with Matt Squire to record the song was one of the best experiences I have ever had. He is so incredibly talented. Just the way he sees the song and his ability to just tweak the tiniest things that make the biggest differences. It was so cool. And everything just flowed so easily. The bits of re-writing, the production, singing the vocals, It all came so easily. I am so lucky that I got to work with such talented people on this song.

What was it like to work with Matt Squire and Keesy Timmer and what did they brought up to the song?

– Keesy is so fun in the writing room, he helped make writing this song so natural. He has a very unique writing style too; his melodies are beautiful, and he has this ability to add really unique guitar strumming patterns (which was the base of what you hear in the piano part in the song). Matt can just take any song and bring it to the next level. He is always striving to make himself better musically. He is constantly listening and studying new music. It encourages me to constantly want to better myself and my music and having a song that you love just be taken and made into something absolutely amazing is such a great experience.

What role does Nashville play in your music?

– I started visiting there when I was 17 then I moved there right after I turned 18. It was literally the week after I graduated from high school. It plays such a huge part in my music because Nashville taught me how to write, grow up, and to lose myself. But I also found myself there too. I wouldn’t take back that experience for anything.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

– Yes! I was actually just in Nashville songwriting. Right now, our main focus is, “Lights” but new music coming in the future.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

– Not at the moment but stay tuned.

Any plans to hit the road?

– We are definitely hoping that the release of “Lights” will give us more opportunities to get out there and hit the road!

What else is happening next in Jennafer Lynsey’s world?

– My future is filled with continued work on my music and honing my songwriting skills. Definitely keeping the connection with my fans. They mean so much to me and I want to make sure they know they’re loved 🙂
