18-YEAR-OLD INDIGENOUS RAPPER AND ACTIVIST XIUHTEZCATL RELEASES “YOUNG (FT. NAHKO & SHAILENE WOODLEY)”

XIUHTEZCATL (pronounced ‘shoo-TEHZ-caht’)— 18-year-old Indigenous rapper and activist today released his new single, “Young (ft. Nahko & Shailene Woodley).  The single is a featured track off his forthcoming debut full-length album, BREAK FREE, set to release this summer. Listen here

On “Young,” XIUHTEZCATL raps, “Am I just a voice for a lost generation?/ The ignorance of people taught me to be patient/ So be patient, and stay humble./ Defeat the hatred, and watch the walls crumble.”

Indigenous multi talented singer/songwriter, Nahko shares his thoughts on the track, “On “Young”, I speak from a very personally awakened space. It’s hard to talk about the raw stuff that didn’t serve you as a young man, but this track gave us the opportunity to go deeper within our own boundaries and reveal the beautiful mess that makes us human.”

Actress/activist, Shailene Woodley shared, “It’s an honor to collaborate with and support my dear friend in spreading strong, thoughtful, and vital messages through his work as an artist and musician”.

Xiuhtezcatl told Rolling Stone:”I’m beyond stoked to release this record, simply because it’s a massive step for me in the world of music. It’s an opening up to the world about who I am and what it is that I’m fighting for in a way that I never have before. A lot of the time you read an article or see a video about me and say ‘Oh, that’s the kid who spoke in the U.N., or that’s the kid who’s suing the government.’ The record is going to change the way the world sees me, and it’s going to change the way that I’ve told my story to the world.“

Along with releasing “Young” and BREAK FREE, XIUHTEZCATL will hit the road for an 11 date run of tour dates supporting Nahko and Medicine for the People. The tour dates–which will feature XIUHTEZCATL performing with band membersRichard Vagner (strings), Isa (vocals) and Jaiia (drums)–begin August 1 in Chattanooga, TN and will stop in Tulsa, Phoenix, Boise, Bellvue, and Omaha, among other cities. XIUHTEZCATL will also be playing at Cali Roots Fest, Arise Festival, and Electric Forest Festival. (See below for upcoming tour dates.)

BREAK FREE, the full length record, was co-produced by XIUHTEZCATL and notable producer Brian Hardin (whose credits include Quincy Jones, Guns N Roses and India.Arie, among others), along with up-and-coming producers Jaiia Cerff and Richard Vagner. The coming-of-age album is the self-told story behind the outspoken, Indigenous-American and features guest artists, including: Nahko and Shailene Woodley on “Young,” Stic of Dead Prez on “Sage Up” and his sister, Isa, on “Blu Ink” and “One Day.”
