Three minutes of thoroughbred rock’n’roll, ‘Flump’ displays the fierce edge to Michael Jablonka’s guitar playing, channelled via an enormous riff, one that spits, crackles and mostly surges through the Londoner’s stunning new single. Partnered with a twisting vocal line drenched in harmony and attitude, ‘Flump’ is a superb example of the fertile ground at the intersection of rock dynamics and pop melody, a place fruitfully explored by the likes of Dave Grohl, Jack White and George Thorogood.
“It was a loose idea that developed at a rehearsal in my garage,” says Jablonka of ‘Flump’, practically defining the phrase ‘from tiny acorns’ in his modesty. “For some reason the riff reminded me of the marshmallow sweet ‘Flump’.” Whatever the tune’s chewy origins, the flavourful final product is guaranteed to be as coveted as a Willy Wonka golden ticket…
Born and bred in the capital, 27-year-old Michael Jablonka has been gigging since the tender age of 14 as an in-demand guitarist for hire, including, over the past couple of years, touring arenas and festivals worldwide with fellow North Londoner and Brit-soul sensation Michael Kiwanuka. During this period, Jablonka decided it was time to blaze his own trail as a bandleader and songwriter, collating a set of intense yet universal rock’n’soul tunes.
Jablonka’s powerful 21st-century take on bluesy indie-rock is proof that there’s still nothing to tingle the spine like soul-soused mastery of raw electric six-string. Gifted, intricate guitar skills bely the no-frills anthemic intent of his rootsy songs, two of which, ‘Peacefully’ and ‘I Found You’, were put out by Lost In The Manor Records in 2017 to considerable clamour. Now armed with a new batch of red-hot releases and perhaps an even grungier edge to his songcraft, Michael Jablonka is sure to be one of the breaking names of summer 2018, partly facilitated by a series of live shows, among them a headline slot on the Lost In The Manor stage at this year’s Great Escape Festival.
