Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Tropical Marijuana”?
Tropical Marijuana is a song I wrote almost three years ago, it was the first song I wrote where after I finished I knew it was a song I was going to really love. I then went and produced it with my producer and it came out beyond my expectations. It’s definitely one of my favorite songs I’ve released so far.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
There wasn’t necessarily a specific event that inspired me to write this song but there was a guy who obviously was really into me for some time and I didn’t feel the same way back but was kind of testing the waters with him. In the end I definitely didn’t want to break his heart so I slowly drifted away. We’re still friends though!!
Any plans to release a video for the single?
There’s a video already out!! I worked with my good friend Avid on this video & he did an amazing job with the vision I gave him. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/wZWkbzDzmyg
The single comes off your new album The Voices – what’s the story behind the title?
So basically, the meaning behind “The Voices” Album title is that I have these voices in my head kind of guiding me through a rough time emotionally. If you listen to the album I definitely get screwed over in the love department and the voices are kinda just me talking to myself, making up crazy scenarios in my head, and basically just driving me insane.. I feel like we’ve all been there.
How was the recording and writing process?
I think I wrote the song pretty quickly, it kind of just flowed out. I wrote it in my home in Burbank and then went to go record it in Miami about a year later. I laid a guitar track and violin track on it too and I think it really ties the song together.
How Nirvana and Ryan Adams has influence you writing?
Kurt Cobain and Ryan Adams are legendary writers. My dad always played their music for me growing up. I love how interpretive and crazy their lyrics are. I am all about writing lyrics that make sense to everyone but only I know the true meaning.
What emotions did you get to explore on this record?
Lots of hurt. Haha. I feel like writing and finishing this record helped me cope though, a lot. I feel great now!!
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes!! Always the plan.
What else is happening next in MARG’s world?
Hopefully another tour soon and I’m always constantly writing and making new music so just lot to look forward to!!
