Buck Meek has shared the fourth installment from his highly anticipated, self-titled album, “Joe By The Book,” premiered by Bluegrass Situation today. The co-founding member and lead guitarist of the critically acclaimed indie rock band Big Thief will make his solo debut on May 18 via Austin-based indie label, Keeled Scales. Buck has also unveiled a Blue Room performance of “Ruby” today; watch here.
Buck tells us of the song “I imagined Joe, the patron saint of automechanics, to honor the memory of Gus at ZP Auto in Brooklyn, who kept our van alive with nothing more than his faith until he passed away on a motorcycle, at which point the van seemed to immediately give up. It was also written to cope with the real-life disappointment of my grandparents being ripped off by a dishonest mechanic in Houston.”
Buzz continues to build for this indie folk virtuoso; the upcoming album landed on Paste’s 15 Albums We’re Most Excited About earlier this week. Buck has been touring alongside the likes of Margaret Glaspy, Twain and more and will continue to showcase this record on the road this summer. Full list of dates is below, including a stellar New York City slot with rising indie darlings, Sam Evian and Katie Von Schleicher, on June 8 at Rough Trade.
Buck Meek’s songs are for the lost dogs of honest mechanics, good guys and girls born into a life of crime, runaways, snow spirits, the ghosts of Central Park, unsung diving-board stars, the affection shared through gambling, and so on. Bred in Texas, more bread in New York City, Meek spins outlaw ballads and quotidian fairy tales into a yarn, with Adam Brisbin on guitar (Jolie Holland, Sam Evian, Katie Von Schleicher), Mt. Davidson on bass (Twain, The Low Anthem, Spirit Family Reunion), and Austin Vaughn on drums (Here We Go Magic, Luke Temple, Sam Evian).
