INTERVIEW: British Singer-Songwriter Jon Allen

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Jonah’s Whale”?

It’s a very happy tune. It’s about that blind joy of love.‘The world maybe going down the tubes but I’m in love and everything’s fine’ sort of idea. I guess it’s a bit selfish in that sense but hey, it’s a great feeling.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I tried to dig way back into my consciousness to recall what it felt like to feel unabashed joy, but seriously, I needed cheering up after Trump got elected so I went for a bit of songwriting self-soothing.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Steve Montgomery at Creation Company shot a live in session video of me and the band at RAK Studios in north London.

The single comes off your new album Blue Frame – what’s the story behind the title?

Blue is a cool color, flames are hot; I like the inherent contractions of bringing those two words together.

How was the recording and writing process?

It has been four years, the longest period between records for me. I just fill up a hard drive of ideas on my computer over time. When I had about 20 songs, I sent the demos over to my producer Tristan.  We recorded the backing tracks live as a band at his home studio.

What role does the UK play in your writing?

Growing up the country in Devon has inspired several of my songs.  The song ‘Waking Dream’ on the new album taps into my school days in an abstract way and the disconnected way I felt when I was young.

What made you want to seek for a new direction for this record?

I was trying to cash in on the soul revival! Lucky for me I love soul music. Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers and Van Morrison were a huge inspiration to me growing up.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

My life, my dreams, other people’s stories, my musical influences, my thoughts and ideas.

Any plans to hit the road?

As of yet, I don’t have any dates booked in the US, but I hope that will change soon.

What else is happening next in Jon Allen’s world?

I am about to start a small tour in the UK and then I will be joining Dionne Warwick on her European Tour in the autumn.
