An undeniable hit released just in time for the change of season, “Baby” is filled with energetic rhythms reminiscent of carefree summer nights. The track is uniquely Yogi, weaving the DNA of different worlds of music together into an exciting new sound that has become the budding artist’s M.O. The infectious track brings together Nigerian-British Afrobeat rapper Maleek Berry, BBC Sound of 2017 winner Ray BLK and acclaimed U.S. rapper Kid Ink to trade verses, while Yogi samples famed house music DJ and producerJulio Bashmore’s “Au Seve.” While bringing his unique flavor and international influence into the masterful production, Yogi has once again positioned himself as the one to watch for in 2018.
The song premiered earlier today with a first look via Complex (HERE), who noted that the song “centers around an irresistibly danceable groove with lyrical sensibilities and cultural flavor from both [the U.S. and U.K.]”
“I wanted to pay homage to the original sample and make something that rappers would want to jump on,” Yogi tells Complex on the song’s origin.
Yogi further explained: “Using 808s along with the riddims we’re hearing in clubs gave me the basis for this. It was so important to get Ray BLK on this as she represents what’s happening in the UK at the moment. She brings that south Landan (London) swag which kept the beat authentic. Maleek represents what’s happening in the clubs in the UK at the moment. ‘Baby’ rhythmically hints at Afrobeat and he was the perfect artist to bring that element out. I’ve spent a lot of time making music in LA and my upcoming album blends U.S. and U.K. culture together, so it made perfect sense to have Kid Ink rep LA culture and help merge all the worlds the song represents.”
“Baby” comes as a follow-up to “Cakin,” Yogi’s epic collaboration with DRAM and Lady Leshurr. ListenHERE. Released at the tail end of 2017, Yogi came through with instant fire, merging the sounds of the UK & US.
