Hi and thanks VENTS for having us! We are great and excited to finally have our debut EP released in the coming weeks!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Same Old Blood”?
It is a song that relates to cultural gaps between generations. It is really a tale that refers to a father and a son. The son wants to pursue his own path and he refuses to follow the path of former generations in the family. Though he’s different, he feels like he’s part of the family. He still shares some ‘same old blood’!
Lyrics, melody and and the idea of the song originally came from Otto a year ago, when we had our songwriting camp. Aleksi played the song by piano and after the chorus he started humming to the rhythm of the song, which sounded great and it became the riff of the Same Old Blood. After the pre-production the song got its anthemic hook and electro feel, which made it immediately one of our favourites.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
As young adults we are in a position where we need to make decisions on our future. Older generations don’t necessarily understand our decisions as the world has changed since they were in a similar situation. Every now and then we face questions on spending so much time on music instead of studies or work. Despite we respect advice from our parents we like to take our steps in the field of music because that’s what we love to do.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
At the moment we have our focus on many different areas and we have currently no plans to release a proper music video for the song. However, we think we’re able to deliver some ‘Same Old Blood’ footage for our fans soon.
The single comes off your new EP Simple Thoughts– what’s the story behind the title?
The name origins from one of our songs and tries to explain some of the complexity of the world. It describes how small and simple one can feel despite of all the efforts trying to understand the surroundings. Because our music is about personal feelings, our simple thoughts in the surrounding entirety are reflected on the EP.
How was the recording and writing process?
The songs in the EP were originally written during 2015 – 2017. We wrote quite a lot of songs during those years but I think the songs that ended up on the EP were the ones that everyone liked from the beginning. Still, it wasn’t simple to decide which songs would make it to the EP and fortunately we still have many good songs in our bank for the future. It’s inspiring how our songwriting skills have improved since we started. It’s the best feeling ever to write a good song!
‘Same Old Blood’, ‘Average’, and ‘Industrial Dust’ were recorded in Helsinki in spring 2018. The closing tracks of the EP, ‘Universe & I’ and ‘Satellites’, have been published and recorded in 2016. Fisrt of all, we had a great time in studio sessions!
What role does Finland play in your music?
The music scene in Finland differs quite a bit from our music so almost all of our influences came from abroad. Still, we have a lot of fans in Finland so we must not forget our homeland. We’re proud of our roots and we love Finland.
How Imagine Dragons and The Vamps has influence your music?
Imagine Dragons has been one of our favourite bands for a long time. The newest album Evolve was instantly added to our playlists. Guess it’s the atmosphere in our music that is sometimes influenced by Imagine Dragons. Also the melody writing is fantastic in their songs which is something we admire. The Vamps is a newer influence to us. Their songs are more pop/electronic styled than ours, but think we’ve gotten some cool ideas based on their anthemic songs.
What simple thoughts did you get to explore on this record?
The songs are about our personal feelings so there are a lot of simple thoughts in our heads. While one of the songs has its origins in boring Instagram feed the other is inspired by the frustration in the commercialism of the world.
Any plans to hit the road?
Sure we do, at the moment we are planning to do live shows next autumn. More to follow 😉
What else is happening next in Planet Case’s world?
We’re constantly writing new music and that keeps us busy. Also we are excited about the Football World Cup which is coming this summer. As Finland is not playing we all have different favourite teams so let’s see who’s wins. 😀
