RODES ROLLINS Unveils Her Dauntless Feminist Anthem “Nasty Woman” ft. Kane Ritchotte of Portugal, The Man

Songstress Rodes Rollins has released her bold new single “Nasty Woman” after partnering with BlackBook last week to launch the lyric video. The publication went on to praise Rollins for her “lyrical slyness and prevocational pluck.” For the track, Rollins enlisted the aid of producer Alex Goose (Weezer, Kevin Gates) and Kane Ritchotte of Portugal, The Man on drums while the lyric video exhibits quirky illustrations crafted by Rollins herself. Rollins’ ability to channel a vast number of women’s viewpoints in an all-inclusive manner immediately brands “Nasty Woman” as a long overdue feminist anthem. Fearlessly empowering the voices often unheard, Rollins urges you all to #StayNasty.

When asked about “Nasty Woman,” Rollins said: “’Nasty Woman’ is a song centered on the themes of female empowerment and pride. Songwriting has always been a tool for me to tell stories – some fictional, and some very personal and real. This time around, I decided to expand the story beyond a musical medium and incorporate visual components as well – my illustrations and a photo series of ten New York women. My intention with this multi-faceted release is to expose the multi-dimensionality of what it means to be a woman in society — being who you are, as you are; and being proud of that. This song is not presented from only my singular perspective, or through just one medium. The very point of what I’m trying to express is that being a woman shouldn’t be a restrictive identity, but rather a broad and inclusive one.”

In tandem with the single release, Rollins has collected the stories of 10 incredible New York women. All women were photographed by Fake Love and The New York Times copyrighter, Emily Chang. Rollins showcased this at a SOLD OUT loft event in Brooklyn on release day alongside a special performance with her band. “In an effort to represent the message of this song as authentically as possible, I felt the release called for more than just telling my own story. That’s why I chose to pair the Nasty New York Women photo series with my song. I wanted other inspiring women to join the conversation, and showcase the varied experiences amongst strong women living in New York. I reached out to a diverse set of women of all ages and personal and professional backgrounds in the city. The women range from family members of mine (including my grandma, Joan!), to friends, to women whose work I’d followed but hadn’t previously met.” said Rollins of the project. She adds: “I came away from this experience evermore convinced of the diversity that exists in the feminist movement, and in what it really means to be a woman. Cléo Kim, one of the women that I interviewed, put it very wisely when she said that, “being a woman is a generous and open identity”. I’m hoping that by sharing these ten stories — eleven including my own — we can contribute in some way to the Nasty Woman narrative of 2018, by showcasing the wealth of diversity in and around what it means to be a Nasty New York Woman.”

Rollins released her debut EP Young Adult in early 2017 and went on to garner attention from the likes of Billboard, Indie Shuffle, Interview Magazine, Paste Magazine, The 405, The Fader, The Line of Best Fit, and more. Rollins’ recordings feature some of the top players in the game including Stella Mozgawa of Warpaint, Matthew Compton of Electric Guest, Greg Rogove of Devendra Banhart, and Kane Ritchotte of Portugal, The ManMajor Lazer’s Jillionaire has even championed Rollins over the years, helping facilitate collaboration between her and producer Branko for his album Atlas.

With all this support, it’s no surprise Rollins made a buzzing debut. The Fader dubbed Young Adult as “a stirring coming-of-age tale that sits on a crossroad of country-rock and somber pop. It’s catchy, brimming with melancholy and romance, and, by the end, bursts with soul.” We expect nothing less from her collections to come.

Young Adult is a coming-of-age tale full of vintage rock, ethereal pop and wavy melodies. Tracks like “Young & Thriving” and “Wes Come Back” stood out on the EP, inspired by her first love who had a momentary lapse in judgment and was put in jail and later deported. With a story so heavy and personal, she spent the five-track EP analyzing the lack of humanity there was surrounding his situation. Now Rollins is ready to introduce the world to more of her self-described “cowgirl poetry.”

With “Nasty Woman”, Rollins is truly focused on the next chapter of her music career. Instead of centering on her own stories, she’s opening up the narrative.

This leaves us to say – if a spaghetti western and Nancy Sinatra had a love child, it would be Rodes Rollins. The 23-year-old singer could fool you into thinking she’s from another time, care of her haunting vocals and sprawling psychedelic-tinged Americana rhythms. But it’s 2018 and Rollins proves that her music transcends space and time.
