Yo VENTS! I’ve been doing awesome thanks for asking!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “How It Feels”?
“How It Feels” was written after my trip to L.A. I had an experience there that really put me in a different place mentally. I wrote “How It Feels” when I got back home and the lyrics came out instantly. I get haunting/nostalgic vibes when I listen to it or perform. When I wrote it I felt super confused about everything that had happened with this guy so I feel like nostalgic/haunted was what I was trying to portray.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Yes. This song is completely inspired by one person. I got super wrapped up in a toxic relationship that messed with my mind but I didn’t realize how toxic it was when I was in it. I got home after my trip to L.A. and felt super disconnected from myself and decided to turn my feelings into art.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
The video was super fun! We shot it downtown from 4pm in the afternoon til 4am. I worked with a great crew. I wanted to capture this feeling of internal isolation and the feelings that come with knowing someone one day to not knowing them at all. There is a guy in the video at times but it’s mostly me reflecting on the past.
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing was done in after my trip to LA. And the recording was done in Toronto. When I wrote the track it all happened super fast. I remember it took less then 20 minutes to get the song finished, I was inspired so the process happened pretty immediately. The recording part took place in Toronto. We had 3 different ideas for production and the r&b version was the last one created.
What role does Toronto play in your music?
I love Toronto so much. I don’t live there permanently, so I feel like every time I’m back I appreciate it that much more. As a creative person I feed off of the energy the city gives me. Everything that’s out right now was done in Toronto, it definitely puts me in a good space for writing.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?
I typically like to work one on one just me and the producer for my own stuff. I feel like you can really get into a vibe when it’s two people.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes. A lot of material is on the way there will be an album coming out. I just started working on the album so we’re putting together some cool sounds. The creative process is always different depending on who you work with. It keeps it interesting!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Not sure on the 3rd single release yet, hopefully soon the song is ready to go. Their is two tracks to pick from the first is called “Use Me”, the second is called “what you need” very excited about them!
Any plans to hit the road?
As soon as I’ve got my album out then absolutely! I’m doing a few shows once this third single is out but definitely will start touring once I have the album done.
What else is happening next in Makk Mikkael’s world?
I’m going off grid to a cabin in the woods in BC for a bit to work on my album. No distractions which I’m excited about. Other then preparing for that I’ve been busy working on the vision.
