INTERVIEW: Russian Roulette

Hi RR, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

What’s up! I’ve been coolin. Just working my job and getting inked. Starting to write my sophomore album.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Discarded”?

My videographer Dustin Bath my manager Nathan James wanted to come up with a concept for the video to express emotion. We did a lot of close up shots and portrait shots. We filmed in Venice beach and Malibu. It was such a fun experience, we rented a 1971 Pontiac Lemans convertible, I got to work with Hanna Beth who was nothing but fun to work with, I wish we had a blooper section because we clowned around a lot.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Well I always wanted to write a song about my birth mom. Never really knew what to say! I was just way to mad about the whole situation. I finally just hit my producer and was like “let’s make this beat”. I didn’t really gave him an idea for the beat (I think), he just made something sad haha. Two days after getting the beat I got in contact with my birth brother for the first time (it had be 18 years). He looks exactly like me, it was weird!

How was the recording and writing process?

Well 2 and a half years in the making. My writing process is personal, I don’t talk about that, but the studio sessions were fun! My manager Nathan and I just have fun and shoot the shit in the studio, and make dope records

What role does Russia play in your music?

Russia is where I’m from. I’ve really been researching a lot about the culture and music especially the hip hop community for the past six months. I was always pissed about being born in Russia. Now I embrace it. It’s who I am and it made me the person I am today. I went through a lot because of my adoption. I am the way I am because of my birth parents. I have no clue who my dad is, his name on my birth certificate is Jon Doe haha. But my mom is where the pain is. No human should ever have to wonder who gave them life. I’ve done so much soul searching my whole life and especially once I starting using drugs at 11 and when I got sober at 18.

How’s your new material coming along?

It’s going great! My sophomore album is going to be special, I didn’t really know what I was getting into recording this first album “Russian Roulette”. I’ve grown a lot in all aspects of my life during this first album. Been through so much these pst two and a half years sober. I’ve got a lot to write about. I won’t discuss any topics I’m writing about but if you go to my Instagram @RussianRoulette651 there are two videos of my rapping verses on my new album.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Well the release is not sure yet! But I PROMISE THE ALBUM IS SPECIAL. The album is called “Russian Roulette”.

What aspect of your personal life and struggles are you exploring on this record?

Addiction, recovery, homelessness, being a product of the system.

You brought some special guests – did you handpick them or how did they come on board?

Yes I hand picked them, Madchild is fucking amazing. His music is unreal. Layzie Bone is a legend and he understands and relates to addiction, he’s not an addict but he grew up in an environment where drugs were being used. Diabolic is just stupid dope with his wordplay and rhyming. I like working with talented people. I don’t care about what they do outside of music but when it comes to music I believe all features are extremely talented.

What did they bring up to the table?

They brought there own twist and added to my music. I love working with other artists. Especially artists I look up to

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes I think my team is discussing me touring over the fall! I want to hit fashion week again (maybe summer or fall). You know right now we are building my foundation. I have an amazing manager Nathan James and publicist Brad Taylor and his team. My videographer Dustin Bath is talented as shit (watch Discarded). My photographer David Sohmer’s is learning about photography and I’m his test dummy model. This journey is a marathon, not a sprint.

What else is happening next in Russian Roulette’s world?

Well today I’m getting a haircut from my boy Fernando on Melrose. Going to pick up my check from work and shoot this music video with Modsun soon. Release that single and then drop the album. Things are going to keep moving forward.
