Hi VENTS 🙂 I’ve been pretty inspired by the people around me lately, which is s u c h a great feeling! Hope you’ve been well too!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Plutomania”?
Plutomania is “the excessive or abnormal desire for wealth.”
The song essentially tells the story of someone who is coming to the end of their life and realizing wow, oops! – I have no friends and only monotonous memories because I’ve spent all my days devoted to climbing up the corporate ladder and -maybe- this wasn’t everything that I truly desired from life.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I’m SO GLAD YOU ASKED, yes. There is this disturbing scene called “Office Man” where a man in a suit sitting at a desk starts pasting green clay, paint and debris on his face. It’s extremely eery with dramatic music that slowly builds as the actor starts performing lunacy. —> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTuvmQNiO3w
The scene comes from the non-verbal documentary “Samsara” which captures the human experience, both “the mundane and the miraculous”. It’s my favourite film of all time. The cinematography and music is s t u n n i n g and the concept is simple and brilliant, I really find it moving. You should definitely watch it if you haven’t already. <3
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
In the words of director Stephanie Traplin, “it was stinky” haha! She is an absolute champ and had a serious stench and abundance of fruit flies in her apartment for three sticky hot weeks in the summer time. Eek!
How was the recording and writing process?
The recording process was incredible. I had such a positive experience with every musician on the album. Each person held a relaxed demeanour but also very focused, which is such a dream when you have limited time in the studio.
The writing process for this song actually started from a music theory assignment while I was studying at Humber! The tedious piano assignment developed in to “Plutomania” two years later… I sure didn’t see that coming! Haha
What role does Canada play in your music?
Privilege most definitely plays a large role. The fact that I have the freedom to spend my spare time crafting music and cultivating community is pretty damn special.
How’s your new album coming along?
The new album is a lil seedling right now:) some conceptual ideas of what topics I want to weave with the music, but the pieces will need some time to be created.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
No official news to share yet 🙂 but it’s coming.
What aspect of community and self-exploration did you get to explore on this record?
There have been 37 artists involved in the making of this project, it’s been a pretty epic collaboration. I wanted to network and create with as many like-minded artists in the GTA as I could; I am so grateful for every relationship that came from it.
I feel that writing and self-exploration fall hand in hand. You are choosing what kind of artist you want to be- what do you want to stand for? Who do you want to create with- what do they stand for? Lots of introspective time deciding what thoughts and feelings are important enough to you that you will spend a significant amount of time creating with and eventually sharing with the world.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’ll be starting out with an outdoor concert this summer for the debut live performance!
After that, I would love to do a lil southern Ontario tour for the end of the summer.. There are no set dates yet but I will be keeping everyone updated on social media.
What else is happening next in Lavender Child’s world?
I still have two more fricken music videos to drop! A little animation for the interlude will be releasing April 27th and the final video for this EP will be coming out the end of May. Can’t wait for you all to see what we’ve been working on~ cheers friends!
