INTERVIEW: King Arthur

Hi King, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been great. Just got back from 2 weeks in the States. A week of studio time in LA and then shows in LA and Orlando. Home for 24 hours and then I head off on the World Club Dome Cruise for 4 days!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single ‘Laidback’?

This single is the beginning of a new era. I feel like its fresh and exciting. This is just a taste of what is to come!

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

A lot of events. All of last year inspired this song. This song was written out of being really bored with modern dance music and going back and listening to stuff from 15-20 years ago that got me into dance music. You can definitely hear the throwback feel.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

There is a visualizer/lyric video coming very soon!

How was the recording and writing process?

This changes for every song. Sometimes you write the music first, sometimes its the vocal, and sometimes it might be a sound that starts everything. ‘Laidback’ was done with finding a bunch of samples and trying to make a record that way. I was really trying to step outside of my comfort zone and not rely on my usual tricks. I’m really glad I forced myself to do that as it ended up launching a whole new batch of music.

Who in particular has had an influence on your music?

All of the new stuff coming is very influenced by Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Moby, mixed in with some pop influence.

Does fantasy and folklore tales influence your music aside from your title?

Haha. No, not really. I do love Game of Thrones though!

After the success of your previous work – were you any nervous while working on this new single?

Definitely not nervous. I don’t write music out of anxiety, fear, or being nervous. My stuff has to come from a place of conviction which usually ends up being hopeful and feel good. There are some records that are more on the moody side but I definitely won’t write from a place that isn’t healthy. If I don’t feel peace about a record then no one will ever hear it.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?

It depends really. We all have our strengths and weaknesses with making music so I always try to play to people’s strengths and draw things out of them that fit with the music I’m making. I have a very clear vision for this project and my job is to make sure all the records show that. If Im working with other people then it’s my job to use their strengths to help get the records to fit inside what my records need to be like.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Oh yes! Lots of new music. The next single is coming out next month. Its called “Places” and I love it. I’ve been playing it at shows recently and a lot of people have been asking what it is! That’s always a great sign.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

King Arthur – ‘Places’ (May 18th)

Any plans to hit the road?

Yup. Off to the airport tomorrow morning. Heading down to Mallorca to hop on the World Club Dome Cruise for 4 days. It’s going to be a great time. Four days around the Mediterrainean with stops in Barcelona, Marseilles, and Mallorca.

What else is happening next in King Arthur’s world?

Lots of new music and shows. We are just scratching the surface of this new era of the project. Lets go Build The Kingdom!
