INTERVIEW: Cat Thompson

How would you classify your music?

AnswersMy music is RnB with an infusion of Pop mixed with a long standing love for the sounds that made people dance in the 80’s and 90’s.

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

Answers: I grew up listening to a wide range of music so I have many musical inspirations from the Seekers all the way through to incredible performers like Beyonce. Growing up, my greatest influence was the vocal power house Whitney Houston. When I discovered and I fell in love with dance I naturally gravitated to and was inspired by amazing artists who sing and dance like Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson.

What do you want fans to take from your music?

Answer: I hope they take my music into their hearts and weave it into their memories. It’s their music as much as it is mine. Music adds to moments in life. We listen to music when we fall in love, when we are sad, when we need to escape and when we want to party. I hope that my music makes my fans happy, inspires them, makes them what to dance and express their love.

How’s the music scene in your locale?

Answer: We have many, really talented artists and bands in Australia! The best part is that we are a multicultural country that celebrates diversity so we get a wide range of flavours and styles. There is a little something for everyone.

What is the best concert you have been to?

Answer: I can’t pick a best! There have been so many really good concerts! I have to say Beyonce’s “I Am” concert in Brisbane was amazing! I loved Brian McKnight’s concert in Sydney – his voice is incredible. Most recently, I watched Bruno Mars perform his 24k Magic concert in Melbourne and I loved every moment of it!

What do you like most about playing live?

Answer: The connection I feel with my fans. It is always a magical moment when they sing along with you.

Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

Answer: My favourite at the moment is my new single Be Mine. I’m so proud of that song. So many people have told me they love Be Mine and it makes me happy knowing that something I have created brings others joy.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?

Answer: Being an artist is like living on a roller-coaster. So many ups and downs but that’s part of the journey. It makes you stronger and wiser. You use the downs to ground yourself and stay humble and when the highs come you embrace every dazzling moment. I believe I grow stronger and wiser each year both as a woman and an artist and I hope to continue doing so for the rest of my life.

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

Answer: I love learning so I would love to sit down and have a chat with Jay-Z. Not only is he a music legend and one of the best-selling musicians of all time but he is also a music business mastermind. The knowledge and experience he could impart would be fascinating and invaluable.

What’s next for you?

Answer: I have exciting times ahead as we are now promoting my new single Be Mine internationally!
