CD REVIEW: Ain’t Gone Tonight by Hi Lo Ha

San Francisco indie rockers Hi Lo Ha have just released an incredible new EP titled “Ain’t Gone Tonight” which is now available for digital download worldwide. This five song rock/country EP is a must listen to, all the way through from start to finish.

Hi Lo Ha is made up of members Ben Reisdorph (lead vocals, guitar), Brian Davis (vocals, bass), James Fisher (drums), and Willie Rusert (keys, guitar). All talented musicians in their own right, coming together as Hi Lo Ha introduces the world to a band that will probably be around for a long time making music that real music aficionados will want to listen to all the time.

Hi Lo Ha comes from the Woodstock area home where Bob Dylan wrote “Highway 61 Revisited,” and I was not going to bring that up in this review, as I am sure that everyone else will, but it is fitting to see the musical influences that have helped form the sound of this incredible band.  In addition, the rock music that Hi Lo Ha plays takes inspiration from classics like the Rolling Stones and The Band, and gives them a modern edge in the style of Built To Spill and Pavement. Combining influences of yesteryear and today, Hi Lo Ha have created a music masterpiece in a time where music all sounds the same and is not exciting for the listener.

Hi Lo Ha released the EP “Extended Play” in 2013, followed it up with a full-length album “These Are The Doldrums” in 2015, and now with a line-up change adding Fisher and Rusert, they are ready to conquer the music world with their new release “Ain’t Gone Tonight.”

Here are the tracks on the five song EP:

“Cold Weather Clothes”

“Come Down”

“Guest List”

“Radio”

And the final track “Thinking ‘Bout A Friend”

Although I think all of the tracks are very strong, my favorites are the first single “Cold Weather Clothes,” “Guest List,” and “Thinking ‘Bout A Friend.” All of the songs have a nostalgic feel to them, as if they were written in the past and updated to sound like they were written today. This is a very difficult task to accomplish, and Hi Lo Ha has done it very well. The songs flow smoothly, all five tracks fit well into the landscape of the EP and it is an eclectic collection of songs that all sound different, with innovative melodies that you will be humming in your head for days to come. Reisdorph has an incredible voice, with great control and the ability to take you where he wants you to go within the music.  I think that Hi  Lo Ha’s new EP “Ain’t Gone Tonight” is one of the best rock releases I have heard from an indie band in 2018. I highly recommend readers to check them out and support great indie music so we don’t have to hear the same songs over and over again by different artists every time we turn on the radio.
