Hi Welles, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been well. We just got back from New York where we did a Spotify session and recorded a very interesting cover you all should be hearing before too long…

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Seventeen”?

We recorded 17 with Dave Cobb in Nashville last year. I wrote it a couple years back and it went through a few different forms before it landed where it is.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

It was a culmination of a few different things. I’d just been recently introduced to the notion and fact of gender fluidity and it made an impression on me, being from the vacuum I came from.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, we did yesterday. We shot it over in Detroit and partly out in middle-of-nowhere Michigan. (Shout out to argyle!)

How was the recording and writing process?

I wrote the song back in Arkansas in a guitar. We recorded with Dave Cobb at sound emporium in Nashville. We laid down live beds and then overdubbed harmonies and solos. I think we had the take done by the 3rd run of it. Then I played a couple solos and sang some harmonies and boom there’s the tune.

What role does Ozark play in your writing?

It’s difficult to quantify the effects of the location of my upbringing on my writing, seeing as to how I’ve got a completely subjective perspective of myself. But if I had to try and say it, maybe it’s the fact that I didn’t have much music coming in (via ANYWHERE ei internet/tv/live venues) that made me such a voracious consumer and studier of it.

How has your upbringing influence your music?

I was raised listening to mostly oldies and Motown and not much else until high school when I got more into rock n roll music. I listened to the Beatles and Bob Dylan mostly, but many others.

How’s your new album coming along?

Nicely. It’s been completed for a minute now, just waiting to release.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

‘Red trees and white trashes’

Any plans to hit the road?

Yep we’ll hit the road in May in support of the Rival Sons.

What else is happening next in Welles’ world?

We are making a music video for a tune called rock n roll. It’s going to be animated and I’m very excited to see how it comes along. In the meantime I’m working at the coffee shop, doing shows here and there, and recording in the basement.
