Hi RJ, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey, I’m great- Just been getting ready for this new release. Happy to be here.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “What You Need”?

Sure. I’ve been listening to a lot of disco lately. Fast tempo, funky tracks with live orchestration and I knew I wanted to do something in that realm. But I also wanted to incorporate some contemporary rhythmic elements like 808’s and modern synths.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Not one event in particular. It’s more directed at the excessive flexing and bragging that guys do to try and impress women and how it shouldn’t matter. You don’t need stuff to have a good time.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yeah. The video comes out on the 20th. I play two parts and… I don’t want to give too much away, so just watch it.

How was the recording and writing process?

Writing and recording is usually my favorite part of the process with any song. Its pure creativity and you get to try out lots of options. The whole process was done over a couple days last November;  One for me and then others for various instruments.

What role does LA play in your writing?

I was born and raised in LA, so It’s a part of who I am and plays a role in all my choices; not just the musical ones. I think, though, it’s a wonderful place to create. There are so many artists to work with here.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

No album- Just working on more singles for now.

Any plans to hit the road?

Nothing’s set in concrete for the immediate future, but I’m sure something will be coming up.

What else is happening next in RJ Word’s world?

There has been more writing, art and probably some spontaneous travel for inspiration.
