Hackney based, singer songwriter, J Appiah is set to release a new single on the 11th of May 2018.
‘Calling’ was recorded and co-produced with Hugh Fothergillat The Diary Studios in London and is the follow up to last year’s‘Come Around’ single which featured rapper Kojey Radical. Available digitally at all major outlets, the new single is accompanied by another stunning video by directorMitch Kalisa who was also responsible for the aforementioned ‘Come Around’ promo film.
‘Calling’ was written while J Appiah was working for a homeless charity and is about the people that struggle with the so many different unsettling aspects of life, be it homelessness, substance abuse or family breakdown. It’s about trying to cope with internal struggles and how people are drawn into things that are usually not very good for them. The singer’s pointed observational songwriting stems from a lifelong fascination with people on both microscopic and macroscopic levels. Having finished a degree in Social Anthropology, watching everyday events is something that has always informed and given shape to his creative and interior life.
Raised on whatever records he stumbled across in his estranged father’s record collection, it was at the tender age of five that J decided that music would be his passion and life. After enrolling in a local Saturday music school, his eclectic taste was given the perfect fertile environment in which to grow and his love of music evolved here. His vast array of influences, from Bob Dylan to Stevie Wonder, from D’Angelo to James Blake and almost everything in between came together in the mix and formed the artist that he is today.
Whether lost in the ineffable emotive range of a Daddy Lumba record or finding an outlet for his aggression in the fierce bars of D Double E, the multi – talented Appiah is a cultural magpie who absorbs all that glimmers and then channels what he’s learned into his own raw songwriting and musical output.
A much sought after vocalist, J has worked with the likes of Michael Kiwanuka, Kwabs, Jess Glynne and Maverick Sabre to name a few, the singer is also a member of producer Damian Lazarus’ celebrated outfit The Ancient Moons.
Currently in the studio putting the finishing touches to a follow up single, Appiah is also likely to announce a run of live dates in the very near future.
