INTERVIEW: Canaan

How have you been?

I’ve been extremely busy, but in the best way. Just finished a NY tour a few weeks back and got back for some NC/SC shows which were stellar!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Coming Back”?

It’s a jam! Is there anything else to say?.. Haha I kid 🙂 It’s funny how a song blossoms really. I wrote this song legit like 4 years ago and it didn’t sound ANYTHING like it does on this EP. I knew what I wanted to say with it, kind of take a positive twist on a negative situation. The song is about always returning to that person you know you shouldn’t for whatever reason. However, in this song I focused on the reasons I do keep coming back, like that first kiss, that first date, that one time we slow danced in the rain. I wanted bring that across in the music as well, which is why it has a more poppy/energetic vibe.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It was a mixture of a girl I was dating in college at the time (2011 to give you an idea of when I was beginning this song). Additionally, I am a HUGE “How I Met Your Mother” fan. Like, seen the series 10 times through kind of fan. There are bits and pieces of the song that I pulled from themes within the series of how Ted and Barney keep going back to Robin and even some little Marshal and Lily references as well.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

I am actually a huge cinematic/videographer nut. I love that creative universe and going to the movies is my escape! So with ever video I’ve done, I try to be as involved as I can be. I had about 4 different ideas for this specific song but when it came down to it, this whole “capturing the honeymoon phase” was it. I actually did all the planning, location scouting, funding, and pretty much everything for this video. Filming it was actually the easiest part. We knocked it all out in one day.

How was the recording and writing process?

I hit on the writing process a little bit a few questions back but as far as recording goes… I love to come up with the meat and potatoes. I have a very hyper active mind and if recording was all left up to me, I’d never be satisfied and want to try 13 different takes for each instrument. So I usually come of with the basic idea and then leave it to my musicians/producer to capture the rest. Of course, I like to come back in and make tweaks and have as much of my hands on it as possible, but for the majority of the process – I get out of my own way.

Does your new single mean we can expect a new album or an EP – how’s that coming along?

“Coming Back” is actually a single OFF of my self-titled EP we released a little earlier this year (available on spotify, itunes, and such). We actually have another music video out for one of the songs off it as well, “Just Me”, and let me tell you, she’s a goody as well! However, I like being progressive and hate sitting still mentally and physically, so new music/videos are already well on their way. If all goes according to plan, I should have a new single out to my #CanaanitesForLife by end go June with an EP not far behind.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

There are 2 tunes I’ve been working on lately that I’m contemplating for the new single. “Greener” and “Out of Nowhere”. That’s all I’ll say for now 😉 Looking for the end of June.

Any plans to hit the road?

Hahah when am I NOT on the road is a better question. I simply love playing, the grind, the process of this dream. Within the last 6 months I’ve been on about 4/5 separate tours traveling from Little Rock, AR to Syracuse, NY. About to hit the road again mid April on a Wisconsin tour. I love being on the road. It’s what it takes in this industry! So thats what I’m doing.

What else is happening next in Canaan Cox’s world?

The next big thing Im really excited about is my showcase at the High Watt here in Nashville, May 23rd. (I’D LOVE IT IF YOU PROMOTED THE FB EVENT LINK HERE). Excited to be performing in Music City and put on one heck of a show!
