INTERVIEW: Alannah McCready

Hi Alannah, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey! I’ve been great! Thank you so much for having me!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Last Girl Standing”?

We chose Last Girl Standing as the first single because I think it embodies the theme of this album perfectly.  Throughout the album I wanted to keep the ‘girl power’ theme because it has been and will always be a major part of my life.  I like to surround myself with driven, powerful, funny and kind women probably because I was raised by one, so I think this song is able to capture that and kick off this new album with a bang!

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I don’t think there was any particular event that contributed to the writing of this song as much as just my journey throughout the years as a whole.  Playing a male dominated sport like hockey my whole life sort of gave me no other choice but to be strong and compete.  Jump ahead a few years to now I am sort of doing the same thing just with a band and a microphone instead of a hockey stick, haha. I have always admired strong women who strive and stand up for what they believe in so I thought it would be awesome to do a fun party-like take on it!

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

Video shoot day was a blast! Our director and friend David Cone is amazing, we have worked together playing music many times so to work together now in this way was awesome! I was able to bring in all my friends as extras and we just made our own lil’ party.  We filmed here in Atlanta at Smiths Olde Bar who is always so good to us and where we are actually having the album release concert next week April 13th! I am ecstatic with how the video turned out and the response from people has been amazing to say the least.

The single comes off your new album Ricochet Heart – what’s the story behind the title?

The album title came from the track ‘Ricochet Heart’.  I felt like it was a perfect follow up to my first album ‘Love Hangover’ which was basically a roller coaster of emotion following a relationship.  I’m calling ‘Ricochet Heart’ my “bounce back” album because for me It has a very strong sense of promoting being a strong woman who still has emotion and a big heart which is exactly the type of woman I strive to be and surround myself with. ‘Ricochet Heart’ is saying that even though we send our hearts out and they may get broken, they will always come back to us ready again for love.

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording process for this album was awesome! I was fortunate enough to co-write the album with Kevin Bowe in my home state of Minnesota which in itself was special for me.  To have someone as accomplished as Kevin believe in me as an artist/songwriter and want to be such a big part of this album and produce it just means the world to me.  I love being in the studio and creating so the making of this album was an amazing experience I hope to repeat!

How does your sports background influence your music and the other way around?

I think that even though hockey and music are obviously very different, for me, they have gone hand in hand.  Playing goaltender and being an athlete at a high level for that matter requires an immense amount of self-discipline and motivation, the same goes for being an independent artist. No one is going to do it for you so you have to want it more than anyone else wants it for you or you will never progress.  Also, I used to sing the National Anthem before my games in high school and did a lot of writing in college especially on the road so I have always tried to incorporate singing in some way even when my life revolved around hockey at the time.

What role does Atlanta play in your music?

Atlanta plays a huge role in my music career; my amazing band fam is here! My band is so beyond talented and I am so lucky to have them, we have such a great time playing shows and, on the road, I couldn’t imagine doing this without them!

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Oh man, inspiration for songs comes from everywhere but this album in particular was inspired by my own experiences over the past few years as well as my friends’ experiences.  My friends and I are very open with each other and tell one another everything so and I figure if we are going through these situations in life we definitely aren’t the only ones.  I am hoping that this album helps heal others just as much as it healed me to write.

Any plans to hit the road?

Absolutely! We will be on the road touring most of this summer actually and I am so excited to travel and play the new album for everyone!

What else is happening next in Alannah McCready’s world?

Shows on shows on shows! The album will be available everywhere on April 27th and along with that we are launching a Pledge Music Page that will be active throughout the first few weeks of the album release offering tons of exclusive content including passes to any/all of our shows in 2018.  I couldn’t be prouder of this album and I just cannot wait to finally share it with everyone 🙂
