INTERVIEW: Jazz Musician Micah Wilshire

Can you talk to us more about your song “Woman”?

Woman is my first single off of my upcoming album, “Manifesto”. Its a neo-soul/jazz love ballad. Complete with strings, soulful b-3 and full band.

Did any event inspire you to write this song?

It was originally inspired by love. I was moved to write a song about life changing love.

Any plans to release a video for the track?

Yes! The video is out now on youtube. The song/video took on a life of its own and we made it about so much more than its original inspiration.

The single comes off your new album Manifesto – what’s the story behind the title?

Manifesto is a “stepping out”, seminal moment in my musical history. I’ve always been the guy in the background.. singing, writing and playing for other artists as my living. This is me.

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing and recording process was usually a late night venture… usually at 1-2am. When my mind finally calms down. The recording took over a year of planning and logistics to get the players I wanted.

You brought some special guests into the album – did you handpick them or how did they come on board?

I feel so lucky to have 2 of the greatest bass players in the world playing on it. John Patitucci and the legendary Willie Weeks. On drums I have the powerhouse Nir Z. Co-producing several tracks I have my long time friend Dennis Matkosky (George Duke, Al Jarreau, James Ingram)

What did they brought up to the table?

They brought incredible musicality, deep musical wisdom and swagger.

What role does Nashville play in your writing?

Nashville shaped my writing. Its THE writing town. It’s about execution and getting your point across quickly. So that shaped my pop sensibilities with this.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Most of the inspiration was life and love. Mostly real, some imagined.

Any plans to hit the road?

Definitely. Making plans for NYC and Nashville dates now.

What else is happening next in Micah Wilshire´s world?

For better or worse, (mostly better) my life is rather myopic with everything being about music in one way or another. Writing, mixing, playing, singing. Trying to challenge myself daily.
