VENTS: Hi Lora, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
LORA: Hi VENTS! Thanks for having me! I’ve been great. Currently on a plane to LA as I type!
VENTS: Can you talk to us more about your song “Both Hands”?
VENTS: Did any event inspire you to write this song?
LORA: The song was inspired by the death of my grandmother in February of 2015. I wanted to create something that spoke to the personal and corporate memory of our family’s experience with my grandmother. It was also a reflection on how after a person’s passes all that is left of them is what other people remember about them.
LORA: How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
VENTS: The filming process was awesome. Naz Films and I partnered together to concept the film, and I worked with a few local industry friends to find the right venue to create the right vibe.
I wanted it to feel true with a sense of nostalgia.
VENTS: How was the recording and writing process?
LORA:I write most of my music in the shower. Lol. I have two kids, so it my space to think, and I remember washing my hair and jumping out of the shower, grabbing a towel and dripping all over the carpet trying to get it down.
I wrote this song in about 10 minutes. I had one more verse in the original version, but it didn’t feel right for what I was trying to say, so when I went I to the studio I opted not to record it.
Working with Steve Greenwell was incredible. This song was really fresh and tender for me, and he was very patient with the process. We were coming up to one year when we recorded, so there were a lot of swirling emotions.
VENTS: What role does Charlottesville play in your writing?
LORA: Charlottesville is a really unique town (IMO). It’s small, but it has a lot of energy and the people are always changing, moving in and out and onto different things. Such is the way with university towns. As an artist, I appreciate the seasonality of energy. It allows for space to have seasons in my soul and in my writing.
VENTS: Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
LORA:Yes! I’ll be releasing another single in the coming weeks, and I can’t wait to share it.
VENTS: Any tentative release date or title in mind?
LORA: End of May/Beginning of June.
VENTS: How personal can we expect this new record to be?
LORA: I think, like “Both Hands” this EP is both personal and communal.
VENTS: Any plans to hit the road?
LORA: Hopefully! Will keep you updated!
VENTS: What else is happening next in Lora Kelley´s world?
LORA: I’m currently working on a music video for the forthcoming single, and I’m excited to be partnering with Naz Films again. One of my personal projects is taking course work in sexual abuse and trauma care. There is so much research available now about the effects of trauma on children and adults, and I’m hopeful to continue to care for people’s stories even as I work through my own.
I’ve also started writing for the next album, so that feels exciting.
