LANZ (The National, Sufjan Stevens) // Hear New Song from ‘Hoferlanz II’ + April Tour Dates Announced

LANZ aka Benjamin Lanz just shared the second track from Hoferlanz II, his second album out April 13 via Brassland. Hear the 10-minute epic “Lice In My Brain” and watch the lyric video for the track HERE. LANZ notes, “‘Lice In My Brain’ is a song about the jumble of life, commitment, and the self-indulgence of creative energy. The ‘Lice In My Brain’ are the song ideas that infest my mind until I scratch the itch and deliberately work on them. At first I played around with the song idea acoustically – for some reason, singing ‘I do’ and ‘It’s true’ at the end of each phrase made me feel like David Bowie. It then turned into a 10-minute, 4-part epic – I had the folk song part but it needed context, so I one-man-band jammed it, creating my Krautrock-esque take on The Who’s 1966 mini rock opera, ‘A Quick One, While He’s Away.’ True story.”

You can also hear previous single “Auckland” and watch the Cyd Charisse-starring video HERE and via Cool Hunting. LANZ will also head out on the road for appearances in Chicago, at The National’s Homecoming Festival in Cincinnati and more. See all tour dates below.

Mostly written while touring as a member of indie music all-stars The National, Beirut & Sufjan Stevens, LANZ’s own music sounds completely different. Says Ben, “While I admire the force and freedom of artistic recluses, I’m an outward-looking guy by nature – so I just end up writing some really weird hooks!” Acoustic guitars mingle with drum machines. Time signatures swerve back and forth. Searing electric guitar licks make their way across the frame. Horns underline cryptic pop lyrics sung in bursts of catchiness – earworms abutting earworms.

Hoferlanz II is the second in a two-part suite of albums launching the LANZ project. In the past Ben has explained the inspiration behind LANZ like so: “As a listener, I admire and enjoy the farthest reaches of experimental and progressive music. But for the last decade or so I’ve made a living playing with some of today’s most canonical indie artists. Yet when putting my own ideas to tape, I find myself writing eccentric alternative rock songs.”

Ben is also the primary vocalist + songwriter in krautrock-style trio LNZNDRF, whom released an LP & EP on 4AD in 2016. Formed in 2011 while on tour with The National in Auckland (yes, again.), LNZNDRF includes Scott & Bryan Devendorf from The National.

LANZ’s background has given him the skills to execute any crazy idea that pops into his head. His alternative rock fandom provides a grounding of stupidly infectious hooks; his contemporary music training, virtuosic chops; his indie rock day job, a knack for making emotional connections in unlikely ways. What all of his experiences have in common is an unshakable belief in the flexibility of rock and roll.
