INTERVIEW: Nicolas Haelg

Hi Nicolas, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey, thanks for having me. Well, pretty good to be honest. My new single has just been released on Sony and I’m working on many remixes and of course new original songs that will be out this summer.

Can you talk to us more about your song “Fight For Your Love”?

I grew up learning the piano as well as the guitar. Therefore, most of my tracks involve somehow these two elements. The track is a collaboration between Sam Halabi, EZEE and me. When Sam Halabi and I came up with the instrumental idea we came across German singer EZEE. We connected and I skyped a few times with her. She has a fantastic voice and we got on well instantly. I sent her the instrumental and she sang a first version of Fight For Your Love. The workflow was pretty amazing. I gave her feedback a couple of times, she changed it accordingly and we had the final vocals for the instrumental ready. The rest is history 🙂

Did any event inspire you to write this song?

You know, I like if a song spreads good vibes, has groove and makes you have this “Good-Mood” – feeling. That was exactly how we approached the Instrumental version of the track. When we sent the Instrumental to EZEE she came up with the lyrical Idea of the song. So it might be right to say that EZZE was inspired by our Instrumental 🙂 We worked on the vocals together after she sent us the first draft after a while it perfectly harmonized with the Instrumental, the result is what you can hear today 🙂

Any plans to release a video for the track?

Well, I am not fully sure about that. Right now there are no plans to record a video.

How was the recording and writing process?

I’d say the overall process took around 6 months. Due to the distance we mostly communicated through Skype. All three of us got along instantly. So while Sam Halabi and I worked simultaneously on the instrumental version, EZEE was writing the Lyrics. We had to send it back and forth a few times, giving feedback for the Lyrics and the harmony she sang.

After the Vocals were properly recorded we made some minor changes to the Instrumental so everything went hand in hand. Overall, the process was very quick (6 Months is not that long in music production) though and we all had the same Idea on what to expect from the track.

After the success of your previous work, were you any nervous while working on this new single?

Well, I guess nervous is the wrong word. I’d rather say excited. I was pretty excited to work on the new title with Sam and EZZE and I am looking forward to see what happens to it. I don’t think there is any reason to be nervous though. I do what I love most, that is the most important to me. I am surrounded by a good experienced team as well, which helps me to stay focus on my goals.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working in your own?

I like to collaborate with people that I know that the chemistry is going to be right. Cause if it is not, working together can be very tiring. Doing collaborations is like relationship building in my eyes. This means that it’s not necessarily about the skills someone brings in, but the personality and the goal to achieve the right quality in the end.

So obviously when working with other artists it’s mostly about how to best use the synergies and about how to find the right compromise between the parties. It can be challenging but in most cases it is an enriching experience.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

No, an Album is not planned in 2018, maybe 2019 or 2020. Currently there are many remixes coming and few more original singles will be released this year.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I am not sure if I can already mention the title of my next single haha. It will be out in roughly 10 weeks from now. So, roughly in the beginning of June.

Any plans to hit the road?

Well, since it is getting warmer I am looking forward to the festivals Season. My main base as a Dj is mainly Europe. So I am looking forward to play some cool festivals again in France, the Netherlands, and Germany or of course my home country this year.

What else is happening next in Nicolas Haelg´s world?

Just getting ready for the upcoming season. I am excited to see where music will bring me this year. Also looking forward to all the fantastic singers and songwriters I am about to work with.
