INTERVIEW: Skyrah Bliss

Hi Skyrah, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello, thank you so much for having me! I’ve been extremely busy with my hands tied putting the finishing touches on my album for release!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Next Him”?

I really wanted a fun, mid-tempo woman empowerment record that’s relatable and I was so happy DJ Chose and I were able to pulled it off! “Next Him” was actually one of the last records I wrote for this album. I’m think it’s a great performance record and I can’t wait perform this record live pretty soon!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

What girl hasn’t had a bad experience with heartbreak due to a man not treating her how he’s supposed to? I haven’t gone through any recent heartbreak but I definitely pulled from previous experiences and also my close friends as well. I wanted to make a record so women can feel confident leaving unhealthy relationships.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

I mapped out the video concept to “Next Him” and we’re going to start the creative process for that pretty soon and I’m extremely excited!

The single comes off the new album Vacate – what’s the story behind the title?

The meaning behind the title Vacate for my album comes from the headspace I’m in when creating music, which is complete freedom. It’s like I go on a mini vacation for every music baby I create. I’d like my fans to escape with me when listening to my music and/or during my performances. I want to be their safe haven away from their worries during the duration of my music playing.

How was the recording and writing process?

I began writing this album solo at my home studio just vibing out to dope beats I came across or sent to me by my producer friends. It later became my dream album when I met a producer named Giggz here in Houston at an Industry Mixer. He’s from Kenya and helped me express my love for afro-house through music and you’ll hear those records on this album. We began to vibe out and he’ll create an amazing beat and most of the time the song would be completely written before he finishes the beat. Then I’ll record my lyrics when he finishes creating the beat and magic is made! I’m really proud of the all of the records on my album and I’m very grateful to be surrounded by amazing producers who help bring my music to life!

What role does Texas play in your music?

Texas will always be apart of my music no matter what direction I take. I can’t always hide my country accent and it shines bright like a diamond in certain records. One thing about me that will aways be so Texas is that I’ll always like to take it slow with my R&B records. Our music is so laid back and I love that about us! We have our own culture I’ll never be to proud to utilize my Texas roots in my music!

How has Michael Jackson and Beyonce influence your writing?

Being that Michael Jackson is the reason I became a performer, everything he does musically I’ve studied the reasoning behind every song concept and delivery. Beyonce being from Houston, Texas as well and is pretty much the Michael Jackson of this generation is monumental because it proves to women and young ladies around the world that we can do it too! I strive to leave a mark in this industry just as big as Michael Jackson and Beyonce!

Does acting influences your music and the other way around?

I would say that acting and music go hand and hand and they influence each other in a way. Sometimes your audience doesn’t really get your message unless they see the visuals and vice versa. I love acting and definitely would like to make a career out that as well. I was more of a jock in High School but my senior year I was finally able to join Theatre and play Sharpay from High School Musical and it’s still one of the highlights of my life. It was so fun I even considered going on broadway!

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

My inspiration comes from my surroundings. It could be anything from the flowers, the sky, stars, moon, the way the breeze brushes up against my skin between season changes, the sea, it can literally be anything. My friends are huge inspirations as well! I create with a open mind and heart. I do my best to express how free I feel through lyrics and melodies so that I can share those moments with anyone who’s willing to listen!

Any plans to hit the road?

Team Skyrah is definitely in tuned with hitting the road after my album drops. More details will be available the closer the we get to the release date!

What else is happening next in Skyrah Bliss’ world?

I have so many ideas and plans I’m executing. One of the plans I’m working on is my own clothing line with a twist to it. I don’t want to limit myself I always want to grow and see what else I can accomplish and I believe the Universe provides whatever you need to achieve it. You just can’t ever stop believing! The album is just a beginning. I have plenty of more music babies I’m ready to share with the world when the time is right!
