Hi Rob, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hi VENTS! Doing well, thank you. Excited for the release of our new Modern Whale song!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “The Dirt”?
“The Dirt” is set for release on March 16th and it will be our first single release of 2018.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Inspiration came initially from an idea of going back to my personal “basics”. The idea of utilizing electric guitars, bass, and drums.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
There is a video for “The Dirt”! It feels naturally reminiscent of cult television program, The Twilight Zone, the music video is produced, directed and performed by Raviv Ullman (HBO, CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox, MTV, and Disney’s ‘Phil of the Future’ and Martin Spanjers (Grey’s Anatomy, 8 Simple Rules). Maneuvering through New York’s finest visual trappings, the video also stars John Beach.
How was the recording and writing process?
Recording and writing process was smooth, filled w/inspiration and no expectations.
What role does Brooklyn play in your writing?
Brooklyn plays into my writing, as I live/work on a street that has a hustle & bustle of music studios, rehearsal rooms and lots of street art. Creativity is certainly in the air and I’m proud to be a part of the vibe.
After the success from your previous record, were you any nervous while working on this newest single?
Modern Whale has had 4 single releases in 2017! I’ve enjoyed releasing singles and plan to follow the same method this year, starting with “The Dirt”.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else than when you are writing in your own?
Sometimes collaboration leads to new ways of doing things but for the most part once the song gets going things are very similar to writing by myself. I do tend to prefer having someone to bounce ideas off of, even if I start by myself.
Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
Have been writing lots, perhaps an EP at some point. Will continue releasing singles for the time being.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
No titles quite yet.
Any plans to hit the road?
Flirting with a summer tour. Can’t say much about it yet, but perhaps everyone can cross his or her fingers for us.
What else is happening next in Modern Whale’s world?
Writing, making videos, playing shows and walking my dog Stella!
