INTERVIEW: Joelina Drews

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I am doing great! I just came back to Germany after spending some weeks in LA and am happy that I released my second single “Drive“ just recently. More music is on its way!

Can you talk to us more about your song “Drive”?

I wrote „Drive“ a while ago when I just went through a breakup and started dating again.

This song is about finding someone new who catches your fall and makes you feel better after you’ve been hurt.

You start to trust this person and let go but at the same time want to take care of this beautiful relationship: “(…) letting go when you role by my side, take me where you wanna go, keep your eyes on the road (…)“

“Drive“ does not only describe the start of something new but also the path from leaving someone behind to open up for something even bigger and more beautiful: „I’m not missing cold, take me home, you’ve got my heart in your hands“.

Did any event inspire you to write this song?

Actually my visit in Los Angeles has inspired me a lot! I love California and the vibe you get here. It’s so chill but there’s a hustle at the same time. Whenever I am there I am feeling good, no matter what was going on before (which might also be the weather). Especially Malibu is one of my favorite places! I just love the ocean and this feeling of freedom you get there.

I just tried to tie those feelings and my personal story together and „Drive“ is the outcome.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

That’s a funny story because the Video was already shot before „Drive“ was chosen to be my second single.

Originally the video was shot for another song but it was a fortunate coincidence that it was fitting perfectly to “Drive“.

At first I was sad because I couldn’t release the other song along with this amazing video and I thought it was work in vain.

We actually filmed it for 4 whole days last summer and it was so much fun! So I am happy that it all worked out in the end and everything happened for a reason 😉

How was the recording and writing process?

This all happened in April 2018 in Berlin after I just came back from LA. We wrote this song with 3 people and all of us had an amazing vibe with each other so it was just flowing. We wanted to write a song for the summer and came up with this song. I hope that people will enjoy it and listen to it all summer long!

What role does Germany play in your writing?

Honestly, I always feel more home in the American culture than in the German culture. It’s just how people treat you and what their values and work ethic is like. In Germany the creative scene is rather small and people don’t value artists as much as in the American music scene.

In America people are so open minded regarding art and they celebrate with you when you’re gaining success. Of course it can be superficial over there and I already experienced that by myself but I still think the American culture is influencing me a lot in my writing.

But to answer your question, something that might actually influence me from my german roots is my very deep emotions and that I am always reliable and would never say something that I can’t keep up with. If I say so, it will be so.

How has your upbringing influenced your music?

As I grew up with a dad who has already been an artist himself, I kinda grew into this business.

I always said that I wanna be a singer one day cause I admired my dad and I loved to see how other people admired him as well because of his music.

I started to take part in a choir when I was only 6 years old. Then I started with piano lessons and private vocal lessons and I loved it. My parents always supported me in everything I wanted to do but my biggest love has always been music and writing. First only little stories and later I put this into my songs.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

I am working on an album but I take my time.

I am a perfectionist and I want everything to be as good as it can be. I already have so many songs that I could tie them together into at least 3 albums but there are a lot of songs that are not representing me in the way I see myself and my music. This needs time and I am still in the process of getting to know me better and this influences my music as well of course.

But I think in the end of this year or the beginning of 2019 people can expect it 🙂

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Not yet but I’ll let you know as soon as I have.

Any plans to hit the road?

I hope to play a tour as soon as I release my album! But right now I am still spending most of my time in the studio.

What else is happening next in Joelina Drews´ world?

Currently I am back in Germany for some time in order to work with some producers in Europe. I’m going back and forth between Germany and the US to work on my music because I am working with different musicians in both countries.

My third single single will be released soon and of course there’ll be an album hopefully soon as well!
