Good thank, slightly anxious but really excited to finally be sharing my new music.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Soul”?
‘Soul’ is the most up tempo track on the “Lost In My aura 2’’ EP, along with the bright and playful video it signifies me blossoming as an artist into a new stage of my career, kinda like the butterfly effect. The idea behind the track for me and the producer “Mr Figz” was to just create something different. Different from what we had made previously and different from what we had heard out there.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes. “Soul’ is very personal to me, to be honest the whole EP is kinda like my diary of the last two/three years, which I’ve now shared with the world lol. I’m speaking about my relationship, working through infidelity, having a baby and what keeps people bounded together in a relationship through tough times. Writing this song was like therapy for me.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
The filming of ‘Soul” was just amazing. I worked with CS visuals who I had worked with previously on the video of “You make my heart go” apart from this time we didn’t have much of a plan at all. We both knew we just wanted to video to be bright, fun and nice to look at. Not much of I plan at all I know. We spent about two weeks just sending each of different photos back and forth for reference points and then CS found the vintage clothes warehouse and that was it, we turned up and started filming. Luckily the owner was lovely and didn’t mind much as long as we didn’t get in the way. I had so much fun trying on all the different clothes, which I think shows in the video.
The single comes off your new album Lost In My Aura II – what’s the story behind the title? / Would you call this a direct sequel to the first installment or is it a standalone record itself?
The EP is a continuation from my Previous EP “Lost In My Aura” I wanted to make this EP a sequel because I really am just telling my story of what’s been going on with me since the last EP. I always put all of myself into my music, my personal situations and feelings, and even the words and langue I use. I try to write my song using the same language I’d use on a day to day basis so that the songs are sinser.
How was the recording and writing process?
Different from my normal process just because it was spaced over two whole years which is very long for me. My previous EP was made in four to five months. So, with the EP during the mix down and mastering process some of the songs where difficult to listen to just because I no longer felt in the way I had described in the song.
What role does Birmingham play in your writing?
I grew up and still live in Birmingham so the city influences me in many ways. My accident and choice of words is defiantly taken from my city. And I also I feel that my need and aim to be unique comes from the city and the unsaid rule we have in our music scene that you must always have your own sound.
What aspect of your personal life did you get to explore on this record?
The EP is mainly based around my love life and the birth and growth of my son and me as a mother. Within my own branding and styIe for this EP I explored “is there a limit the level of sexy you can be if you’re a mother?”
Any plans to hit the road?
I would love to do as many shows as possible this year & travel to as many new places as possible. I feel the live/performance aspect of my craft is still yet to be mastered and the only way I can do that is to do more shows.
What else is happening next in PhePhe’s world?
Now the EP is released I will be putting another Video and I’m in the process of setting up my first solo show as a celebration event for the EP. I’m always writing and recording new music as that’s what I love to do. I don’t plan to have another baby any time soon so hopefully the next project will be out sooner than the last one came lol.
