HDNET MOVIES deploys a squadron of celebrated combat classics in War Stories—airing Sunday, March 18 at 7:30pE. The tour of duty kicks off with Golden Age icon Kirk Douglas as a colonel forced to defend his troops when they deliberately refuse an order to embark on a suicide mission in the 1957 Stanley Kubrick opus PATHS OF GLORY.
The night continues at 9pE with the 1969 epic THE BRIDGE AT REMAGEN, starring George Segal as an American Lieutenant tasked with capturing a vital railway, and Robert Vaughn as his counterpart on the opposite side of the fight who must blow up the bridge before the Americans close in—risking the lives of the German platoon trapped on the other side. Ben Gazzara and E.G. Marshall also star.
The evening comes to a close at 11pE, with Willem Dafoe’s powerful portrayal of Salamo Arouch, a boxer interned at Auschwitz who finds himself in a fight for his life when his captors force him to fight his fellow prisoners for their entertainment in the stirring 1989 biopic TRIUMPH OF THE SPIRIT. The film also stars Edward James Olmos and Robert Loggia, and made history as the first major feature to be shot on location at the actual Auschwitz death camp.
