INTERVIEW: Brooke Law

Hi Brooke, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been great thanks! Hope you have too…

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Hidden”?

The song was inspired by the film ‘Hidden Figures’; based on a true story of three African American women in 1960’s. Despite facing significant racism and sexism, they managed to make a significant contribution to the NASA space programme and their work continues to make an impact today.

Women are struggling all over the world for their right to have equal opportunities, and continue to make significant contributions to the world we live in today. I would like to use this song to say thank you and recognise women of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Aside from WID, did any other event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Well through writing the song l have reached out to various women’s projects and been super inspired. I am performing at the Million Women Rise March this Saturday in Trafalgar square. I’m also going to be doing songwriting workshops with the London Black Women’s Project, where all profits of the song will be going.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

I loved storyboarding the video, and then seeing it all come together felt like such an achievement. Nick Sneath did an amazing job of editing to make it exactly the way I imagined. All the women in my family are in the video also so we had an awesome time together.

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process was pretty chilled, I met up with my friend Kath Haling soon after I’d seen the film Hidden Figures. I was obviously super inspired and then writing with another female meant we both have a lot to say about this subject.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are writing a song for a special moment like this rather than when you are writing any original work?

I’ve been through different writing phases, last year I was all about the vibe and thinking of the melodies like patterns. But now I’m all about the concept, lyrics and melody are most important to me at the moment.

How has Janis Joplin and Annie Lennox influences your music?

They are both have such heart and soul when they sing. You can really feel what they sing, which is something that’s so important to me.

Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

I’m hoping to start releasing my music in June, I won’t explain the sound too much but its Gutsy Pop with an Indian influence.

Any plans to hit the road?

At the moment, I’ve got the rally in TRAFALGAR SQUARE this Saturday.

The BOOGALOO 12th March.

And NINETY ONE on 10th April

What else is happening next in Brooke Law’s world?

I’ll be releasing the music video on VEVO next week (14the March) so definitely watch this space for that. I’m planning to release my first ‘Brooke Law’ single in June, I won’t explain the sound too much but its Gutsy Pop with an Indian influence. I’m really excited about it.
