Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Something Real”?
This is one of my favorite songs I’ve written. It’s about all the things people do to make themselves feel alive. I’ve found that it’s been meaning something different to everyone, which I absolutely love. That’s the point of music, right?
When I was writing it, I wanted to play a character who acts like she doesn’t care about anything, but is actually dealing with a lot of shit, which is why she is so crazy. I wanted to comment on my generation and on party culture. And it’s maybe got some truth in it for me tbh J
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
College life, really. I knew so many people who would drink every night and get fucked up out of their minds and I started to speculate why they were doing that.
The song has taken on a whole new meaning for me after my recent breakup, though. I feel like I predicted a feeling with this song. When I sing it now, I’m connected to it in a whole different way. We’ll do anything to distract ourselves from pain and crazy nights are totally part of that for my generation.
But for me, there’s an innocence to the song as well. The simplicity in the chorus explains that look, we all do it, we’re all just trying to feel something.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Comin’ at you this month. Keep your eyes peeled.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was super dope. I worked with an incredible producer and dear friend Steve Pagano. It’s actually funny, we were brainstorming ideas, and I had written the hook “I’m just tryna feel something real” about 2 months prior, recorded it into my voice memos, wrote a song around it, and then trashed it. I told Steve that I had this idea for a song about trying to feel something and he said “sing it to me.” I told him I thought it was trash, but he insisted. He said it was the coolest thing he’d heard all day. We fucked with the chords I had originally written and tightened it up, and the rest is history. I just think it’s so funny how I scrapped the idea just a few months prior, and now it’s one of my absolute favorites.
It came together super quickly after that, I think we put together production in about 3 or 4 sessions. It was just one of those songs that was inspired and flowed out of me.
Him and I worked out of his little studio in North Hollywood, so the entire process was very intimate, which I think comes through in the song. I felt I was able to be super honest the whole time. We definitely had some therapy/venting sessions which contributed!
What role does LA play in your music?
LA is home for me. I grew up here. I don’t think I would have the courage to pursue music without it. LA definitely inspires me daily, and so many people who I meet have something special about them.
As hard as the LA music scene is, I’ve met a huge amount of incredibly talented musicians who seem to just want to help each other. I’ve definitely formed a pretty cool community here.
I also love how there are always shows going on, always new music to see.
Oh, and the weather is warm. Isn’t that obligatory when talking about LA?
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Oh yeah. I’m sitting on a bunch of unreleased material. Come see me live for a sneak preview.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I’m on the singles track right now, wanting to give each piece its time in the sun. I’ve got a bunch of new songs lined up so stay tuned.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m out there now! Check out my Facebook page for dates. I’m playing LA, Vegas, Whittier, Pomona and more.
What else is happening next in Holander’s world?
Always making new music. Music vid this month. Playing shows and hopefully making people feel something real. 😉
