INTERVIEW: Luca Schreiner

Hi Luca, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thanks so much for having me! All is going well thanks, hope you guys are well too!

How did the remix of Tyler Cordy’s “Cheap Situation” come about?

I’ve met Tyler a year ago in New York for the first time, we had two studio sessions together, working on some new music. It was super fun so we stayed in touch over email and facebook. He’s such a good writer and his voice sounds incredibly unique to me. Tyler then released the original of Cheap Situation a couple of months ago and I remember that I immediately loved the track from the first time listening to it with its guitars and his dreamy voice.

What was the approach you were after with this song?

I definitely wanted to keep the original guitar in the break section and just give it a little more tempo and power in the drop sections with some of the instruments and synths I’m known for. I think it has a unique style now crossing over rap type of vocal parts with a modern kind of dance pop production.

How was the recording and reconstructing process?

He basically just sent me the guitar and the vocal – that’s all I needed. I think the break sections really need that stripped down instrumental vibe, especially since his voice is super dreamy and emotional. I then just tried to find a good way to combine the more calm parts with my dance pop type of parts.

What role does Germany play in your writing?

I guess not really much even though Germany has a big music-culture especially in Techno and Folk music! Speaking about that I used to go to a lot of Techno and Underground events but I guess when it comes to producing and writing I went into a more commercial musical direction.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are remixing someone else than when you are writing your own solo material?

It really depends on the track really. Sometimes you get a song sent as a stripped version and take a similar approach to when you do a remix, and sometimes you build an instrumental and then go into a session with a singer or songwriter and start writing from there.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yeah, absolutely, the festival season is about to begin and I just played in my hometown Stuttgart at Club Seven together with Mike Williams. I’m also super excited to be playing at the World Club Cruise this coming April together with Robin Schulz, Lucas & Steve, Nervo and many more as well as at many other big shows in Germany! More info about that soon

What else is happening next in Luca Schreiner’s world?

I finished university last year in September and since then I’ve been super productive in the studio working on remixes and original music. It’s so amazing to finally be able to focus fully on music and not worrying about grades 😉
