INTERVIEW: Australian rocker Harts

Hi Harts, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Been great, excited to start releasing new music.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Ain’t Nothin’ On Me”?

The message was inspired by being happy in my own skin and being confident in myself. Something I was struggling with for a long time. I wanted to inspire people to be their best selves, and encourage people to go for their goals.

Did any particular event inspire you to write this song?

A series of events inspired me to write the song. Most of it stemmed from a lot of rejection I faced in the music industry. Also some inspiring words from Prince.

How was the recording and writing process?

I recorded it all at home in my bedroom studio, like all my other music. The main guitar riff came when I was messing around one day chopping up samples of my guitar playing from another song. It all came together quickly after that.

How has Jimi Hendrix and Lenny Kravitz influenced your writing?

Jimi Hendrix influenced a lot of my guitar playing, as well as bringing that bluesy side to the music I create. I studied his playing so much that his music has become part of my musical DNA, in a way. It’s hard to pick up a Stratocaster without sounding like Jimi, ha. Lenny Kravitz shares a lot of the same influences as me, and I think our music shares similarities because of that.

What role does Australia play in your writing?

I don’t think Australia directly influences my songwriting, it doesn’t play a huge role there. But the support I get in Australia definitely encourages me to keep on releasing the music that I do.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else than when you are writing on your own?

Yeah, collaboration is something I don’t do too often. But, when I do get the opportunity to it’s a much different approach that I take. I try to keep an open mind to ideas, even if they aren’t the most comfortable at first. I tend to trust the other persons judgement and lean on that other perspective as much as possible, knowing that my own solo stuff will always be the place where I can create the music that I want to create. I’d want to try new things in a collaboration. Things that I wouldn’t necessarily try in my solo project.

Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

It’s all coming along well, I’m not saying too much about it right now. But there is an album coming this year. And a whole lot of other music on the side as well..

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Nothing confirmed as of yet.

Any plans to hit the road?

It will be around the album release time I’m sure. I can’t wait to get back laying shows.

What else is happening next in Harts’ world?

Right now just a lot of new music. I’m excited for this year and I can’t wait to show people what I’ve got in the works.
