Hi Sydney, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hi! I’ve been really good, very excited for the single release.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Seventeen”?
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes, actually. It’s funny because I get the feeling off feedback that people think the whole song is all about being the age of Seventeen but it actually isn’t. I wrote this song after I had a wonderful and memorable day/night in Camden Town with my boyfriend and after reflecting on the night I realised that the guy who imagine you’ll fall in love with when you are seventeen or who your ‘dream guy’ would be always turns out different and is actually so much better in reality.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes! I am really excited about it as I’ve never done my own music video. ‘Billy bones productions’ has done some really great visuals for people like ‘Press 1’ who is a battle champion, he’s a really good friend and I always love how Billy films and edits so we are filming this week. I have a few ideas but I think simple would be best so maybe just film in Camden – hopefully good weather!
The single comes off your new album Melodic Therapy – what’s the story behind the title?
Well I have had quite a tough last three years as I lost a friend of mine due to a tragic incident so it really has been a mental journey for me, learning to accept things and be happy again. As I was writing over this time it helped me so much and I really feel that this EP is an all-round development of myself- when I listen to the songs I feel quite proud.
How was the recording and writing process?
So much fun! I learnt so much about all different sides of the process, especially the recording parts. I had written these songs previously but recording them professionally was a whole new world to me and Matt my producer was incredibly helpful and taught me so much. Now, being in a studio is my comfort zone and I can’t wait to record the next!
How has Lykke Li and Corinne Bailey Rae shape your writing?
Lykee Li was someone I really admired from a really young age, her natural creativeness and breaking barriers in music was just wonderful to listen to and watch. When I sit down to write, I try unusual chords and maybe go for something a little more eyrythat usual. I’m sure Corinne is an idle for many people, her voice is such simply wonderful and her songs are timeless. There is such a quality about her that I always try to resemble in my work- less is more sometimes!
What wild corners did you get to explore on this record?
Well, as I’m a very acoustic artist I never know how the songs are going to turn out. I knew that I wanted a hip-hop beat as that’s how I play it on guitar but that was really it, we laid down the beat and went from there. Matt found this incredible double bass and started messing around, it really is for me the main focal piece of the track and I just think it makes it, I love it!
Any plans to hit the road?
Hoping to do some gigs to promote the single and then probably release another single from the EP, then the EP itself sometime in May. I am really excited and just going to see what happens, I hope everyone gets a really sense that I wore my heart of my sleeve with this EP and look forward to more stuff from me.
What else is happening next in SYDNEY’s world?
To be honest music, music, music! I am going to one of the most beautiful countries for my birthday in June, Iceland! But to go see some Icelandic bands & DJ’s at ‘Secret Solstice Festival’ then some sightseeing so I am really looking forward to that. Apart from that I am normally working at home in my studio writing and recording, I only work part-time so it’s really cool to be able to spend a decent amount of my life doing music.
