Buck Meek of Big Thief Announces Solo Album, Debuts First Track at NPR

Buck Meek, co-founding member and lead guitarist of the critically acclaimed indie rock band Big Thief, has announced an upcoming solo album; Buck Meek will be released May 18 on Austin-based indie label, Keeled Scales.

NPR premiered the first album’s first release today, stating “‘Cannonball!’ is a blast of dry heat — a sly easy-going number led by Meek’s crackling guitar work and his cock-eyed vocals. The song is a thrilling elaboration of all the things that make Meek’s guitar playing so compelling in Big Thief, where he serves as guitarist alongside lead singer and songwriter Adrianne Lenker… When he plays live, he channels the tension of his body into his dynamic playing, which is jumpy and electrifying as an ungrounded wire. Here, he matches that dynamism with his voice’s own odd inflections and a twisted yarn of a story. That carefree, mischievous sound and song title befit Meek’s great gift — the easy exuberance that underlies his every note.” Read the full piece here. The song is also featured in NPR’s Austin 100, a playlist of the best artists to catch at SXSW 2018.

Songwriting shines brightest in Buck Meek. With a glowing eye for the unseen and a pretty concision that calls to mind the likes of John Steinbeck, Meek has unearthed elegant poetry deeply embedded in the mundane. Throughout the 10-song collection, characters recur and interact in subtle but resonant relatability, forming an intricate tangle of tales, all inspired by the writer’s lived-in experiences. The natural musicianship present in both album and performance provide a delicately shifting surface atop which these storied lyrics glide.

The solo album is an instinctive extension of Meek’s integral role in Big Thief. He and frontwoman Adrianne Lenker worked prolifically together prior to the Brooklyn quartet’s massively successful releases Masterpiece and Capacity. The band’s impactful debut delayed the wider reception of these songs, but in doing so, allowed for gentle fermentation and delicate formation of the stunning shape they’ll take this May.

Buck Meek will embark upon a string of U.S. dates this spring, including shows with Twain and Margaret Glaspy, respectively, as well as a coveted slot at Willie Nelson’s Luck Family Reunion in Spicewood, TX as part of his time at SXSW. Dates are listed below, more to be announced.
