Hey and first of all: thanks for having us! We’ve been pretty good or as we adjust to our new surrounding: Ca va bien! It’s a sunny day in Montreal and after having the coldest winter of our lives, it feels springy!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “New Past“?
It’s the first single of our upcoming debut album, it’s a dreamy and spaced-out synth track about romantic time traveling.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It wasn’t really a certain event which got us going with that track, but much more a emotional condition. While writing and recording it, we found ourselves in this quite intense bubble of being totally isolated and concentrated on the process. We came up with the music and the lyrical idea of time travel blended right into it that vibe.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
To be honest, now and then our heads are flooded with potential video ideas for our songs. New Past and its story is kinda meant to be told in a video. It’s in the lab right now, cooking and getting ready, watch out for it!
How was the recording and writing process?
With Sea Moya, writing, producing and recording often melts together. When we start working on a record, we like to throw ourselves in a completely different environment. This is what we did with our debut album: pack up our studio and put it in a van (which already carried us writing and recording the Baltic States EP,), drive from Germany down to the Italian Alps and move into a tiny mountain hut located in the beautiful village Falmenta. Having this unique spot surrounded by pure nature created a special kind of atmosphere which got our juices flowing. This vibe of being focused and calm at the same time definitely reflects in „New Past“. We started messing around with an old instrumental idea of Iven, who we wrote this record with, chopped it up, slowed it down, added a whole bunch of samples and synth lines and here we are!
What role does Montreal play in your music?
We recently moved to Montreal as a band which is still super exciting. Again we find ourselves in a different surrounding with different people in different music scenes. Coping with that, you got to stay flexible on all kinds of levels and that probably reflects on our way to consume, write and deal with music. In Montreal itself is so much going on. Every night there’s a show, art event, party – you name it!
How’s your new album coming along?
Almost there! I think with debut albums you can easily run the risk to overthink it which we (so far successfully) managed to avoid, I guess. Right now we are in the mood to put it out there – it feels good!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
With our last record we chose to name it after the place it was written and recorded which was the Baltic States. Not quite sure if that’s an option for our next one, but it’s worth considering. Should be out at around summer (whenever that is in Canada).
Any plans to hit the road?
We will leave for the United States in a couple of days: playing SXSW in Austin among other shows and Canadian Music Week in May. Later this year we plan to continue touring including Europe!
What else is happening next in Sea Moya’s world?
Fully embrace our Canada experience, learn French, eat poutine! And we already feel like writing again! I heard Newfoundland is the place to be?
