INTERVIEW: Jarel Portman

1: can you talk to us more about your song “ Supersonic” ?

Supersonic is a song about freedom. Scott Patton and I wrote the song together. We have always just been able to synchronize naturally. There are lines such as “ I’m not chasing you anymore “ which refer to not letting myself get caught up by things that at the end of the day don’t really matter , or I can’t control. It also talks about how it’s all about the sound you hear now. Musicians just hear things that they call the muse. Every musicians biggest fear is they will lose that. Yet I’m not worried. I am accepting of this gift and am honored to have it , for as long as it stays. Running down the track trying to find peace in nature also speaks to freedom that’s always available.

2: Did any particular event inspire you to write this song ?

No. It just came flooding out of me. That goes back to the muse. It was there just waiting for me to release it. It does speak to being a musician and hearing what I hear and trying to put it out in the best way possible.

3: Any plans to release a video for the track ?

Not sure yet. We are going to do a video but another song from the record “ Runaway Blues” is getting a lot of attention so we will see which one is the subject for the video.

4: why naming the album after this song in particular ?

Just thought it was appropriate due to the sonic quality of the album.

5:  How was the recording and writing process ?

Great ! I love bringing songs to life and with Scott Patton and Bruce Bennett it’s just so chill and open.

6: How has the 70’s 80’s influences your music.

I don’t think like that. I just write from my heart and sing from my soul. I don’t feel like I consciously think about anything other than what organically comes out.

7: where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics.

Just living life and being present to all that is swirling around me. They are stories , but there is stuff in the songs just for me and I don’t revel that. It takes away from the songs if I explain them. They will mean many different things for everyone who hears them , I hope.

8: Any plans to hit the road ?

We were talking about that today. We will see how it shakes out !

9: what else is happening in my world ?

Way too much to state , but all good. Already have a bunch of new songs for the next record.
