Alice Phoebe Lou Unveils Single on NPR, Announces SXSW Official Showcase

Alice Phoebe Lou has premiered the new single and video, “She,” via NPR’s All Songs Considered. Born in South Africa and having developed her ethereal indie-folk sound busking on the streets of Berlin, Alice has caught the ears of a community of music lovers the world over with her honest storytelling and raw, beautiful voice. Her fiercely independent approach to her music has given the singer songwriter a creative confidence that shines through in her captivating vocals and stripped back music. Last year, a live version of this song was released and racked up over two million plays on YouTube. In addition,  it was selected to be featured in the film BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY, executive produced by Susan Sarandon. The movie has already won several awards including BEST DOCUMENTARY (New York Film Critics, Online) and been nominated for numerous others.

Alice explains that the song is a “high energy anthem… inspired by women who go against the prescribed boundaries and pave the way for other women to be empowered and realize their strengths. It feels incredible to release it into the world, at a time that feels just right, as woman everywhere tell their stories and are heard.

The studio version of “She” is accompanied by first-time director Natalia Bazina’s (bazina.sass+) abstract visual interpretation of the song, with the self-described objective to “find the way to delicately keep the world of the singer as metaphorical, fragile and detached, as it is [and] create a calm picture of a boundless world with a small human, standing in the heart of it.” Bazina and producer Natalia Skliarova (Hermes production, bazina.sass+)  found the “small humans” in two synchronized swimmers, Agata Orekhova and Vera Panyukova, and shot in a black-fabric enclosed pool at the The University of Physical Education in Moscow. The resulting music video is “memorable and truly serves the song, one of depth and beauty.” – NPR

On the heels of the release of “She,” Alice will travel to the US for the month of March. Much of her time will be spent recording a full length album to be released later this year. She will also make several appearances at SXSW.
