Hi Jenna, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
So good!!! Thank you ????
Can you talk to us more about your song “ILYSM”?
I wrote it with one of my favorite people to write with, Sydney Cubit. I had most of the verse ideas when she got there and she had a killer hook called “ILYSM.” We basically put the ideas together. When we sang that hook for the first time we were both like “oh my goshhhh I love itttt so much” ???? haha.
Did any event inspire you to write this song?
The basis of the idea was inspired by my husband who played basketball in college when we started dating. Hints the line “number 23 pulling on the strings, trying to keep my heart in track, wanting your last name to be written on more than just the back.” He was actually number 33, (shhhh don’t tell!) but 23 felt better in the song. Either way it’s about him. He’s so cute!
Any plans to release a video for the track?
Yes! We are shooting it at the end of this week. It will be out at the beginning of March! YAY!
How was the recording and writing process?
It was so fun, we brought in a friend of mine named Lalo to help with the track. He completely killed it. The beat he laid down gave it the perfect base to make it sexy and sweet at the same time and gave lots of room for a pedal steel solo, my favorite instrument.
Can you tell us more about your new sound, New West?
Yes, ILYSM is a really good example of it. It’s a balance of pop, loops and synthetic sounds balanced out with the super western traditional pedal steel. It feels like who I am as a person. I am a balance of the new and coming from a family that ranches and is very traditional in a lot of ways. Both things have to be represented or it doesn’t feel like me.
What role does Texas play in your writing?
First off, George Strait, I fell in love with country music listening to him and the Dixie Chicks. They both painted the pictures of the scenes I grew up seeing in their music—it made it so romantic to me. I want to make people feel the way those songs made me feel.
After the success of your previous material – were you any nervous or felt any pressure while working on this new material?
Always! You want it to just get better and better, but I am very excited to share it!
Does the single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes, I have a few more songs up my sleeve and hope to cut a few in the studio this year as well!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
That’s for me to know and you to find out ????
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes! I have a few shows this month and I am really hoping to be out on the road as much as possible this year.
What else is happening next in Jenna Paulette´s world?
Writing, writing, writing. Some of the best advice I have heard as an artist is to keep writing. You never know what you will come up with next and the only option is to get better ????????
