Bishat is a rising Swedish artist, songwriter and producer with roots in Ethiopia and Eritrea. She writes and performs dark soulful pop with influences from contemporary R&B. Compared to the likes of Lykke Li and IAMDDB, Bishat’ssound is familiar yet all her own. Bishat got her first taste of making music at the tender age of 13 when she wrote her first song with José González.
Bishat said about working with XOV (Damian Ardestani):
“Damian (XOV) and I met working in Lesbos as volunteers for I AM U (which he founded) during the refugee crisis and we became really good friends. I always loved his music and his drive so a collaboration felt natural.”
‘Unholy Romance’, taken from her forthcoming EP, is about a reckless infatuation that’s destructive and damaging. A relationship crashing in slow motion and the twisted and addictive rush it gives.
Bishat recalls: “When we came together on a cold rainy and bitter day on an Island outside of Stockholm I had to get on a car ferry to the studio where I was working and found myself standing in the freezing cold looking out over the dark water and knew this wasn´t a day for happy tunes…”
“We were sitting in his cabin talking about life. We had the theme and I came up with the title which he loved but finding the lyrics was more of a struggle so we took a break. Damian went all Freud on me and when we came back we just wrote it. It was fluid and effortless and I felt it had something special.”
Bishat self-released her first three tracks on her own label MINAMIN in 2016 which received over 2 million streams. She was named ‘Best New Artist of the Month’ by Pigeons & Planes and received support from the likes of Clash, Indie Tronica, United By Pop and Cougar Microbes making her sound a blog favorite.
Bishat’s new track ‘Unholy Romance’ is released on the 14th of February.
