Jazz re:freshed and British Underground to host SXSW showcase celebrating the best of new UK jazz

Innovative music curator Jazz re:freshed and showcase producer British Underground today announced the return of UK Jazz to SXSW Festival with a 2018 showcase featuring a world-class line up of the emerging UK jazz artists currently shaping our understanding of the contemporary UK jazz scene.

The showcase on 14 March in Austin TX, which will feature performances from acts including Nubya Garcia, Zara McFarlane, Ezra Collective, Blue Lab Beats, Ashley Henry and the Re:Ensemble and Moses Boyd, Solo X, follows the unprecedented international success of the launch of JAZZ RE:FRESHED OUTERNATIONAL – a two year global partnership project presenting the artists at the frontline of the UK jazz revolution.

The JAZZ RE:FRESHED OUTERNATIONAL partnership (two-year showcasing programme lead by Jazz re:freshed and producer British Underground with funding from Arts Council England) has already had an impact and last year saw the launch of a major stage at SXSW festival in Austin TX followed by a series of showcase events in partnership with Brooklyn-based festival promoter AFROPUNK in Europe and North America plus sold out performances at SIM festival in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

The success is set to continue with the JAZZ RE:FRESHED OUTERNATIONAL project staging their next showcase aiming to challenge traditionally held perceptions about UK jazz and promote underexposed music and jazz artists deserving of the widest international recognition. Featuring prominent jazz pioneer Nubya Garcia along with other artists such as Moses Boyd and Ezra Collective who are challenging the Jazz status quo with their unique reinterpretation of traditional jazz with wider, younger influences more from genre’s as diverse as grime and dubstep.  Nubya Garcia, who was nominated in the 2017 British Jazz Awards in the rising star category ‘Rising Star’ as well as nominated for Jazz FMs Breakthrough Act of the Year stated, “I’m incredibly excited and really grateful to be heading out to SXSW alongside bands and friends I’ve grown up with, it’s going to be really special. I’m looking forward to playing my music to a new audience!”
