INTERVIEW: Theo Czuk

How would you classify your music?

The FERAL JAZZ CAT! Because my jazz compositions are eclectic and encompass Fusion, Classical, West Coast Cool, Blues, Klezmer, Beat Jazz, Swamp Jazz, Bossa Nova and, of course, Swing. Among others.

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

In jazz songwriting: Hoagy Carmichael, Fats Waller, Carlos Jobim, Bill Withers, Tom Waits

What do you want fans to take from your music?

Intellectual lyrics wrapped up in the energy and fun of the grooves.

You play piano, guitar, bass, saxophone, harmonica and sing. What is your favorite instrument to play?

The one that happens to be in my hands at the time.

Do you have other creative outlets besides songwriting?

Well, I’m an award winning novelist. And poet. And I like beer.

What do you like most about playing live?

Feedback. I love the back and forth energy that comes from a live audience. I get as much as I give.

Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

Do I have a favorite child? No.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?

I have expanded my writing chops to where I feel comfortable writing in any genre. Except classical. But who knows where the next path might lead?

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

Mark Twain – I have been dubbed “Mark Twain with a piano.” But Vonnegut, Dylan and Miles Davis would be fun as well.

What’s next for you?

Surprise me.
