Hi Alexander, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Really good. I have a sunburn and it hurts a lot—I’m in Australia at the moment.
Can you talk to us more about your song “Arizona”?
I wrote it during the winter a year ago, fantasizing about someplace warm as the setting for the song. It’s about fear of committal, but how that can dissipate in mindfulness of the amazing moments and really in living in the moments.
Did any event inspire you to write this song?
Yes, the ongoing event of watching my single dude friends run from commitment.
Any plans to release a video for the track?
Yeah potentially—been looking into that the last month.
The single comes off your new album Too Young For New York – what´s the story behind the title?
TYFNY is about being stuck in between the dream and it’s fulfillment. Most of us live our lives in the “in-between.” The verses are about being alive in the moments and enjoying them, the chorus is about still struggling with the in between.
How was the recording and writing process?
Really fun. I wrote everything in studio, which I’d never done before. I wanted the album to feel a bit more cohesive sonically and thematically, and I think this helped.
What role did NYC play in the writing of this record?
Everything—NYC is the pressure cooker that brings hidden existential meanderings to surface.
What aspect of love did you get to explore on this record?
The tangible side, day to day side mostly. Heart Shaped Pool is a bit more Love Nouveau, but the rest have a seasons of life/love vibe.
Any plans to hit the road?
