Can you talk to us more about your new EP ANABASIS?
Of course! It has four tracks on it, two of which are already out (Monsters and Scars). The making and writing of it was a form of self discovery for me. All the tracks are rooted in deeply personal struggles and feelings, so just thinking about them being out to everyone who decides to listen is terrifying. At the same time, though, it’s super grounding to know that the more people who relate to these songs, the less alone I feel, and the less alone they feel too.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this project?
No, not really, actually! I was writing the songs just because I wanted to write songs, and i had something to say. I knew I eventually wanted to release an EP, but when these tracks were being written, the EP wasn’t even being planned yet. Each song has its own little story, though, almost as if they’re separate entities that later came together to form the Anabasis EP.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes! There is a little music video in the making which i am so so excited about! Sarah Midkiff, who is a good friend of mine and a ridiculously talented gal, is going to be directing it!
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing process for each song was quite different- but all of them were written in sudden moments of inspiration, which is what they all have in common. They were also mostly written during late nights, as most of my music is. The recording process was pretty simple, but prolonged a bit by some personal struggles I had, being in and out of hospitals a lot. I made the EP at Bloom Music with Joey Auch, who is a super rad guy + crazy talented producer as well. I had never set foot in a studio before, recorded anything with a real microphone, nevertheless worked with a producer, but Joey really listened to me and gave me full creative control while we were making the EP, which was super cool.
How did your upbringing influence your music?
I got into a lot of trouble and made a lot of mistakes growing up. It gave me a lot of things to work on and figure out within myself, and a lot of material to write about too, i guess!
Does your EP mean we can expect another project soon – how’s that coming along?
Hopefully! I have a TON of songs that I want to record and release soon(ish)! Ideally, i’d want to release a second EP with 4 or more tracks on it before the end of 2018, but we’ll see. Only time will tell.
Any tentative release date or title in mind for the next project?
Yes! the “Utah” EP. Likely 4 tracks, maybe more, though! and ideally, i’d want it to release on December 6th, 2018 (specific, I know).
Any plans to hit the road?
This summer! My good friend Kasey and I are planning to hop in a little car and drive across the US playing shows. Lots of shows!
What else is happening next in Mae Krell’s world?
Ahh! I don’t know! Writing more music, playing more shows, taking more photos, and hanging out with my dog, for sure.
