INTERVIEW: Captain Squeegee

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been superb. Just in a perpetual whirlwind of order & chaos… You know… Like the Universe.

Can you talk to us more about your new single “Our Children”?

It’s a song of hope in the face of almost certain doom. A funky doom. Like a wild party that you know will either be raided, or end in a house fire. We get this vibe that Earth is spiraling out of control… so we’re putting all our eggs in the basket of the next generation. Our Children. If they don’t save the word… well, let’s just not worry about it & keep raging.

Did any event inspire you to write this song?

Thematically… Constant war. Natural Disasters. Talking to genius kids addicted to their cellphones. Musically… we opened for Parliament Funkadelic a few times and this groove is a direct result of hanging with them.

How was the filming process and experience behind the music video?

It was insane. Essentially we assembled all the necessary ingredients for a psychedelic rave… Slime, Pinatas, Projectors, Lava Lamps, Hot Alien Babes, a DeLorean… then just invited a pack of children to run around and dance with us. We filmed it all in ONE NIGHT. Big props to YellowBox films for pulling it off!

The single comes off your new album Harmony Cure – what’s the story behind the title?

It’s sort of a play on the idea that music can heal the pains of existence. The album attempts to tackle some heavy shit… age, death, faith, depression, starving artists… Maybe through song & harmony we can find a little peace amongst the madness.

How was the recording and writing process?

It takes a long time to craft a Squeegee song. We have a ton of moving parts & instruments, so the songs start with a basic demo and loose sheet music for everybody. Then we just lock ourselves in the squeegee-space and hash out the details. Then after months of stewing, we take our sonic-stew to Flying Blanket Recording and blitz through everything as fast as possible.

What was it like to work with Bob Hoag and how did that relationship develop?

Bob Hoag has essentially become a secret extra band member. He helps us shave our massive musical ice block when we bring our songs to him. He is also a master studio tambourinist… listen close for that haha. Some of our favorite AZ bands had gone to him for years, and when we signed with 8020 records, we had no choice haha.

How much did he influence the album?

I’m telling you… listen for those sexy tambourines. Total game changer.

What aspect of beer and aliens did you get to explore on this record?

Well we did MAKE a beer for the record. No joke. It’s a red-style IPA called ‘Harmony Cure’ that we collaborated on with SunUp Brewery. It’s delicious and makes the album sound WAY better. As for aliens… we’ll be at the International UFO Congress again this year, and we’ll have to see how the UFO community likes the record. They tend to be huge squeegee-fans.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes. And the galaxy.

What else is happening next in Captain Squeegee´s world?

Just more global domination. Pretty basic.
