After the successful release of last single‘Linda Ronstadt’, which premiered via The Revue, Vancouver trio Bad Pop are back after an intense September touring in the UK and they are ready to reveal their new song, ‘On Your Own’. Having taken the world by storm with previous singles including ‘Bad Pop’, with more than 50k streams on Spotify, and ‘Same House’, they have built up a reputation for their unique music and distinctive sarcasm. This time, they surprise us with a song characterized by soft tones and calming vocals. The new single is a slight departure from their usual raw punk rock sound, a process that had already started with the song ‘Linda Rondstadt’. The band skillfully incorporate pop melodies with a sense of irony, honesty and sadness recalling bands like Pavement, Pixies, and Modest Mouse. Speaking about the new track, lead singer Chris Connelly says:
‘“On Your Own” explores the exhilaration and sadness of being out in the world, as a real-deal adult, on your own. It’s a relatable feeling for everyone who has experienced the cold reality and loneliness of adulthood – not the “I can vote for the first time” type of adulthood, but the heavier kind.’
The triptych of top-notch rock star talent that makes up Bad Pop is (Drum Roll…) front man Chris Connelly, who is alternatively heart-warming and menacing – like a pissed-off Weird Al. Next up is superstar multi-instrumentalist Catherine Hiltz weaves melodic bass lines like a punk-rock bar-brawling PJ Harvey. Completing the triangle is drummer Aaron Klassen who was raised on a steady diet of Bonham and Grohl, and plays as if the snare just said something about his mother. In the band’s own words ‘we are serious about not taking ourselves too seriously’.
Bad Pop have been pretty busy recently. They have toured the UK alongside indie heavyweights Superglu this past September. They then flew back to Canada where they had their last show on the 20th October, Halifax Pop Explosion, which was a complete success. Now they are about expand their horizon even more, and they have live dates planned in India this December: they have been announced for The Gig Week in New Delhi (7th) and the Bacardi NH7 Weekender in Pune (8th – 10th).
