INTERVIEW: Disco Shrine

Hi Jessica, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi! I’m doing great, thanks <3

Can you talk to us more about your song “Up In The Air”?

Up In The Air is a song I wrote inspired by my parents and their journey to America after escaping from Iran during the revolution in the 70’s.

Did any event inspire you to write this song?

It all began around Thanksgiving last year. The whole family was sitting down discussing politics and the fate of immigrants in America. And that’s when it hit me that my parents have never told me their story of how they came to America. So, I sat my dad down, poured him a very strong drink, and made him answer every single question I had. I asked him so many questions that my family kept pestering me to leave him alone. I knew that they left Iran during the Iranian Revolution, but I never would have thought their journey would involve false imprisonment, escaping death, sneaking out of the country, and flying to the U.S. in an Austrian military plane.  Their story and strength really struck a chord in me. It made me look at them in a completely different light but also understand them a lot more than I did. Their strength really empowered me and made me feel closer to my Persian roots, but it also made me realize how grateful I am to them for bringing us to America and creating a better life for my family. I wouldn’t be here, pursuing my dreams as a musician, if it wasn’t for them.

Any plans to release a video for the track?

Yes yes yes! It’s currently in the works, and I’m very excited. It may or may not involve old videos of my family from the 90s <3

How was the recording and writing process?

The song was written in a tiny home studio in Glassell Park. It;’s on the top of this hill with a gorgeous view of LA. I wrote it with my producer Samuel Jacob Lopez Jr, he;s done stuff with Crystal Castles, 30 seconds to mars etc… We had no real intention of writing this song or even writing a song that day. We were just hanging out exchanging music we were both into at the time and then we ended up making the beat for Up In The Air, and I freestyled all of the lyrics and melodies. We basically finished the song in an hour or two. Funny how things work out that way.

What role does Iran play in your music?

My persian heritage definitely plays a huge role in my life. It’s a part of me I

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

I’ve been spending the last year just writing so you can definitely expect lots of new Disco Shrine very soon 🙂

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes yes! I’m going on tour and am soo so excited for it!

What else is happening next in Disco Shrine´s world?

I’m going to be featured on the next Maison Kitsune America 5 Compilation which comes out on Feb 17th and is a collaboration with the NBA! It will be sold in stores on vinyl in Kitsune Stores around the world including NYC, London, Paris, Tokyo, and China! I’m also planning on throwing a big persian benefit concert around Persian New Year in March. There are so many amazing Persian American artists in LA. I want to provide a platform to celebrate them and their artistry and what better time than persian new year!
